Block casting 3914678 is a 68 block used for 327 or 350 engines.

V1117B4    V is engine assy plant Flint Michigan

1117 is date of assy. Nov, 17th

The B4, do not know. This is the engine suffix code and have no record of that combo.

Partial vin 781120204    the 7 is Pontiac Div. 8 is the year (1968) 1 is ST.Therese  20204 is assy sequence no for the car.

Best That I could do. Any one got anything to add or correct ?

Ian

Thanks everyone for your quick response, I am wondering if the V1117B4 is V1117BH.

I think the 7 is the fifth digit of the Vin therefore would not refer to Pontiac, and I'm sure 1 is the Oshawa plant.

No that's the correct sequence. first number is Division. 1 would be chevy. 7 is Canadian Pontiac division. What they do for the engine vin is remove the 4 number series and body style from the vin number. That leaves you with Division, year, plant and sequence number.

Here is a sample from Nasty Z28 Also check out with Chevy by the numbers book.

VIN Code Format
The vin code format is stamped onto most engines. The format consists of divisional identification number, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle serial or sequence number.
In 68-69 model cars, the serial (VIN) number of the car the engine was installed in is stamped next to, or under the engine code ID.
Starting in 1970, the serial number is stamped either above the oil filter, somewhere on the block pad (in front of the cylinder head), or on the transmission flange somewhere. Chevrolet issued technical service bulletins to indicate which engines were to recieve a vin stamp, so who knows what could have happend (or not happened).

VIN code format Example: 13N100001
(1 = Chevrolet, 3 = 1973, N = Norwood, 100001 = Production sequence of vehicle VIN)
