Cheap way to get into the hobby. '77 GP $2500

The pics aren't so great (my neck's a little sore from cricking it sideways), but if the car is as good as it sounds it looks like a good deal.  I guess there's just not that much of a market for disco-era Ponchos these days.

That's a sharp looking car, unfortunately not a very desirable model from an auto  hobbyist perspective. These post '72 A and G cars just don't get any respect among collectors and I speak from experience as owner of a '73.

True enough, the one below has been for sale at $3500 since last summer and still appears to be available:

Then there's that decent looking 73 GA in AB, but I think the main problem is that the seller doesn't answer emails:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/calgary/1973-pontiac-grand-am/603263425?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

I tend to be a fan of the A's but not so much the G's.  If either of those GP's were '73-'75 Lemans collonades I'd probably have bought one by now.  Not as much a fan of the rectangular headlight cars as (IMHO only) I think the rectangular headlight design and resultant squared-off styling revisions were somewhat incongruous with the intent of the original design (just my thoughts - no offense to owners of these cars).

Another thing to mention with those 77 GP's is the standard engine being a 301. The car is likely much heavier than the first year iteration in '73 and that came with a 400 standard. I'm no 301 basher but in that heavy car they do labour. In the next years model that was downsized the 301 did fine.

301 small block?   My mom had a 76 or 77 SJ, I don't know what was under the hood, but I always presumed it had a 400.

My dad test drove one with a 301 and actually asked the salesman if a V8 was optional. As far as small block and big block goes, to me there is only one small block and that is a Chevrolet and only one BIG BLOCK and that is also a Chevrolet.

Isn't the 301 in the same engine family as the other American Pontiac V8s - the 389-400-455 family?

An interesting consideration for this car in particular is that the buy-in is so cheap that you could swap in one of those big Pontiac powerplants and make a real goer for a relatively small investment.

301 is the same block as the other Pontiac engines.

While we're on the subject of 73-77 GPs, this is one of the nicer ones I've seen.  It's a little more money but already has the 455:

Now were talking. That is super nice. We had one almost the same in the family only 400. It was a great car and super fast too, I loved driving it as a "young man", still had that gentleman's GTO quality about it.

That 73 is a nice car. I like the rear end styling. The tail end kind of reminds me of a '72 Olds Toronado
