Rat Boy and 65camino spent a little time under the Blue Beast this afternoon and its starting and running fine. While I hate to admit this, the starter bolts had come loose causing the problem. We shimmed the starter with one shim and used a torque wrench to tighten. I found the torque spec on line to be 35 lb ft. While the car was up we did an engine flush and poured in 6 quarts of Rotella T 15W40  which was on sale luckily at Canadian tire for $29 /5 litre jug. Installed a fresh AC Delco PF-1218C filter and did two burnouts, one in reverse and one in forward.

.....427 is right be prepared for all kinds.........my 2 cents is any heavy duty diesel #30 or 15/40 if you want a multigrade.

I ran a starter from AutoZone for the last 30 years as the first starter went out when it was about10 years old, but for the last couple of years ,,,almost 3 now I've had a PowerMaster starter on the car. I like the mini starters because of the size & for the cranking abilty. My 462 is 532 horse at the rear wheel & it take a bit of extra umphhh !!! to turn it over. In the past 30 or so years I've used the forever warr. from AutoZone I thnik now about 4 times. I only drive my 73 about 1500 miles a year so that doesn't say much for the starters. But since I've had the PowerMaster starter on the car I haven't had any problems with it at all. I think I paid just over $ 175.00 for it at a show they were at & it's been a good investment for me. Also because of the size it made it so easy to install plus it gets it far enough away from the exhaust & block it doesn't get hot anymore & cause it not to start when it gets hot. No matter how much I do drive it it starts right up everytime. No more waiting for the car to cool down so the car will turn over. I give 2 thumbs up for the mini starter from PowerMaster.

I sold PowerMaster starters a few years ago to some of the drag racers we sponsored    Not so lucky with them    Switched to small GM starters off GM pickups   Much better   (2 cents)

         Me too   But   its whatever works     Glad Rex has success with his    I had one customer with a 13-1 comp sbc that "ate" powermasters  and no warranty on racing stuff

I've had that loose starter problem myself..

Starters certainly can be a bain for a car nut. In australia not a big choice with starters. Wouldn't have a clue on GM standard part number but mate and I usually refer to them as a boat anchor type which were always used on oz chevs. Large and heavy and eventually would fail...years ago purchased a tilton reduction starter, second hand, and used it. What a sweet piece of kit that was..so good i would remove it and put a boat anchor on a car when I would sell it and use it on the next car. Had a 400SB in a 65 parisienne and told would not fit due to balanced flywheel and bolt holes....  Yeh right....got under her and drilled the block to accept the bolt in the new position. The block actually had a boss cast blank in the position required. Because of the steering box on the RHS it was a tight squeeze for extractors so really needed that mini starter to make it easy. Was able to rotate the front housing and redrill bolt holes to clear the extractors. 20 years later its now bolted to my big block waiting to breath life into that badboy....with determination and lateral thinking..not to mention time...we can do anything!  

Being a car nut rocks! I love a challenge and you get plenty from old classics!
