I think there is something "fishy" about that car......All the SS 409 4 speed cars I've seen have had tachs on the dash just above the steering colunm. And that's the wrong shifter as well. That's a bench 4 speed shifter.I'm just sayin'..........then again I could be wrong.Must be a 340 hp car.And if it's so all original, where is the original air cleaner set up?

Seller says its original  never restored   he didn't say it was correct  e.g  air cleaner  wires etc

Chevrolet impala ss 1964 two "hardtop" door with a 409 4 speed manual. The car is completely original never restored (original seat, original paint, original chrome, it is in exellent condition) with SEVERAL new pice. It is 41 200 000 Original. This car has already been taken for a tour of Quebec film with Roy Dupuis.

Internet says the Tach was a "option"     doesn't say if it was a must have with 409's

.....I know my 58's when it comes to "W" blocks under the hood, but not sure on the 64 as to the fan shroud being correct here. This one looks tight against the belt , even the top rad hose is touching, the fan blade must be way inside the shroud and virtually impossible to get at the bolts. A small block sits further back so the long shroud would be correct, but with the 409 the shroud needs to be about 3" shorter to make some room......at least that is what the 58 is like small block to the 348 W block. 64 GM parts book says 2 different numbers for small V8 and 409 fan shrouds. The pics looks like a 283/327 shroud to me. Correct me if wrong.  And a 41,000 mile a/c  car WHY would the a/c compressor be missing etc ?    looks like a engine swap to me.

I ordered a 64 SS 300hp auto  (a Central Chev) car. It came with a tach . Salesman said tach  was standard equipment on 300hp & up. I bought a 64 SS 300hp convertible years later . It came with a tach. It was a US car. In fact I never saw a 300hp or up without a tach

I've seen 300 horse automatics without a tach but I am thinking you mean on a 300 hp 4 speed?

There's so much about this car that doesn't add up.Unless the fellow can come up with some documentation verifying this to be a legitimate '09 4 spd car,I would stay away from it........

One thing, could be careful wording. It says the car is completely original, but maybe that excludes the engine being original to this car. It's original, from another car maybe?

You know I had this thought, what if-what if it's just a 348 dressed up as an '09?? That's one engine family I couldn't tell the difference between the 2.I'm not saying I can tell the difference 'tween a 396 for a 427 but I do know the difference 'tween a 427 to a 454. I guess buyer beware eh.

64's had the round metal tube shifter, not the blade Hurst type. That doesn't mean much as most of the factory shifters were scrapped by 1970. It's a great looking car though, especially if it's original paint.

Re: 63 SS Factory Tach
03-04-06 05:45 AM - Post#886673
    In response to fullsheds

Any full size car (any model) came standard with a tach as part of the 4-spd option, when coupled with 300hp, 340hp, 400hp and 425hp engines.
The tach was optional on any V8 otherwise, such as a P/G 300hp or 340hp. If you ordered a 250hp 4-spd car, the tach had to be a separate cost option. To put it another way, that was the only available 4-spd car that did NOT come standard with a tach. The tach had nothing to do with the Super Sport option.
Clear as mud, right?
