Option A51 indicates Sport Deluxe 396, which is a big block.

Sad to say that is a bogus document.

Any 67 Beaumont SD built after approx. Dec 1 66 would have a VIN starting with 738. Your's starts with 736 making it a small block car.

Also, I don't have my the block codes here but I think that engine code is for a small block.

This is interesting, the switch over to 738 was in Dec 66, this is a 736 with A51 code ???

Maybe I'm too harsh with that statement. It's possible too that GM just made a mistake documenting it, but it is certainly not originally a big block car.

Yes, that would make it a bucket seat Custom.

I thought the document looked odd, the engine number is 100% a St. Catharines, McKinnon Industries engine. All Big Blocks start with T for Tonawanda, the only place they made them.

I am pretty sure that is a 283 code but didn't want to say for certain without looking it up tonight.

Are you saying that is what came from GMVVS as the documentation for the car?

Marshall, it doesn't matter to me one bit if your car is not a real 396 car. For those who haven't seen his car, you're missing out, it's a beautiful car.

This was pointed out to the seller before you bought it. Was it mr. Feeleus that you bought it off of? Or did it change hands between then? That documentation is pretty old, 1993... I'd hope the person named on that document wasn't the one that performed fraud, but someone did. I think feeleus owned a wrecking yard west of winnipeg.

You do have a nice looking car regardless!

some BB's did come out of McKinnon in St Catharines although very rare . An all Canadian car !
I questioned George Z and he confirmed after verification that it was correct .

personally I'd guess a simple (major) error when A51 showed up on the microfich --- that said George has provided an awesome service over the years-so this could have been fraud by someone - anyway just contact George and get him to do it again or verify the info you have - he really is a great guy

by the rest of the indicated options its a small block--tire size, engine code, date of production for a 736 vin

I have heard by many that its an awesome car !

That car was built originally as a Beaumont Custom, plain and simple. It IS very nice and it has the SD louvers on the quarters. Great colour combo as well.

The DE engine code is for a 283 Powerglide, 7.35 tires were not offered with a big block (they used 7.75-14 in 66, F70-14 in 67).

D55 is coded as an RPO on your documentation. When A51 stood for the Sports Option, the console was included and was not coded as it couldnt be added or taken away. After the Sports Option was cancelled, D55 became a new separate option that could be added or left off on a bucket seat car.

You could get a Powerglide with the 396 through 1968.

Only the big block cars used a bolt-on rag joint that year. In the U.S. where you could get a factory tilt wheel on a Chevelle that year, they also came with the bolt-on rag joint.

I am with Ray on this, I have never heard of a MacKinnon big block, only sixes & small blocks. Tonawanda was not a long train ride from the factory to the Canadian side; likely it rolled right past the St. Catherines plant on the ride around Lake Ontario to the Oshawa & St Therese assembly plants.

Chevrolet did produce 454s at the Flint, Michigan plant by the late 1970s but other than that I am fairly certain that Tonawanda was the only plant producing big block engines in the 1960s & early 70s. Mark, if you have documentation to support your 396 as having been produced at the St. Catherines engine plant then that would be a first. Do tell!

...interesting thread here. By some chance did this year of car use a 5/16 fuel line from the tank for the 6's and small block 2bbl and a 3/8 line for the 4 bbl engines just like the older X frame cars ? if so would be worth just taking a look to maybe give another clue here.

Yes, that is correct Michael.

Also another clue on big block cars is the unique frame mounts for the engine. In this case, no need to look that far because we know it had a small block.

I just came back from an hour long highway drive and I was thinking about this while driving.

I am leaning towards a mistake in the document, simply because GM likely didn't even have it all sorted out when George documented this car. He may have the answer as to why it happened at any rate. I know from his past participation here on CP, he now has the whole 67 SD rats nest A51/738 thing sorted out correctly.

Ě guess the only loose end on this thread is this notion that L34 Big Blocks were cast at McKinnon.

Do big blocks also have additional frame support? (Perhaps only on 66 and/or rag tops?)
