It would be a cool truck if it were all in one piece at that price. I well remember these with the 2 stroke Detroit. They smoked, belched oil, revved, and made a awesome noise!

file054_sml-1.jpgfile053-1.jpgHeres a '52 Hayes exactly like I use to drive. Brutal man brutal. Offset cab, Three stick shifts, double clutch every shift, no exceptions, manual everything. Was the oldest commercial working vehicle when I was driving it. Truck was possessed, very temperamental truck, brutal man brutal.

Brutal is a good description for that Hayes. We had a 1950 White Mustang dump truck years ago when my uncle had a construction company. It was a 6 volt, 6 cyl gas, no synchromesh straight cut gears monster. But it did look cool.

I am confused, is this motor a diesel or a two stroke? I have a hard time thinking it is a two stroke. Any thoughts on this here. George.

My other questions on this rig are........... what is meant by "Cracker Box" and is this an actual prototype that was never mass produced. George.

It's a 2 stroke Detroit diesel George. They have a wonderful unique sound.

WOW WOW WOW I love this kind of stuff. Thank you, all you gentlemen for enlightening me on this subject. I guess nut bar "tree hugers" like Davis Suzuki and Al Gore and other such wackies, would really love this engine. This motor does not sound that "planet" sound. Anyway i appreciate the education here. Any other info as to why they stopped making this engine? Was it the hippies that killed it? By the way to all the overly "GREEN" folks out there, i agree to killing off any "STUPID" motors that are out there. Cheers. George.

I've owned a few two stroke Detroit diesels. I really liked the way they sounded, but they were pretty loud and after 8 or 10 hours of driving you could get tired of it.
The later turbocharged versions were quieter. (the turbo fed the supercharger)
The power on the older versions peaked at the governed rpm so you had to keep them revved up in order to make good power.

I don't think these engines could have passed modern emissions, they leaked a lot of oil and burned more fuel than the modern diesels.
A highway truck would usually use at least a gallon of oil every 2,000 miles.

The Detroit Diesels were lighter and less expensive than the Cummins Diesels so they were pretty common.
In the Rocky Mountain area the Cummins and was more popular due to it's wider power band and more powerful engine braking.
The Detroits were sort of fun to drive though, and the later ones had a lot of power, especially if you installed oversized injectors.
