Sorry for all the new post guys, if you already saw this, my apologies, just came across this 70 454 strato chief, pretty cool. If I only had garage space, I would have another '65-'70 poncho! Maybe some day.

Ummm, that's one of my cars.  While owned by Hillar Pinna in Toronto it was known as the "Green Monster", but I prefer to call it the "454 Laurentian".    Here's a photo of it at the 2014 Pontiac Nationals in Wichita KS.

My compliments for such a stunning '70! For some reason the '70 was always my favorite year for big Pontiacs, the front end styling is like no other. Back in the mid '70's when I was 4 or 5 years old I remember my dad's friend who worked for Hughs air craft in long beach CA. He factory ordered a '70 Catalina coupe, same color dark green as your. I visited him and his wife 2 years ago when I visited Culver city and asked about it. Sadly it's long gone now as he sold it in 1981 though he told me how he purchased it new in 1970. He ordered a new Firebird with a 400 and 4 speed. The GM auto strike happened and delayed production of the Firebird. Then he found out he was going to be a first time new dad. The dealer felt bad (Salta Pontiac in Long Beach CA), and had the Catalina sitting in their service department that somebody ordered and never took delivery of. This '70 Catalina had a 455 and turbo 400 auto with discs, Comfortron AC, safety track rear end with 3:08 end. Also it sported ralley III's wheels and red stripe uniroyals along with ralley pac dash and sport wheel. Dark green with black vinyl roof and interior. I was surprised to learn he also had a dealer installed ram air IV package installed (cam, thinner head gaskets, jets, distributor curve etc). I remember the car well, and how the front end sparkled in the sun. Good times, by the way he did trade a white '66 Catalina 2-door sedan with a 389 and 3-speed stick for it .

Was it called the Green Monster because Hillar kept it hidden under his Bed??

Raj, two points here. First of all i love the story you told about the 70' you remember. Second point is the 70' "Green Monster" that belonged to Hillar, i never met the man but i wish i had. Ray knew Hillar and he sounded like the kind of old car guy that every old car guy should know. That was and is one special car that Hillar once owned. Cheers. George.

Just a side note but you'll notice that the forum that this post is in is called " Hillar's General 65 - 70 Full Size ". This car and Hillar's love for full size Pontiac muscle is the reason.

One of the reasons I drove it to Wichita instead of my usual 2+2 convertible is the Laurentian has cruise control.   I replaced the signal light lever (which has the button on the end to engage the cruise) when I got the car as the button itself was missing, but the cruise was very erratic and just about drove me up the wall.   I replaced the control unit with a new one a couple years ago, and it works perfectly.   When on the interstates, just set the cruise at 80 and it just purrs along.

It's also always fun to have the americans read the nameplate aloud, and the most common pronunciation is Lorenteen.  I'm kind of hoping to give the engine a gasket rebuild and paint job later this winter.

Clint, you are obviously a very lucky man to own such a sweet piece of Canadian automotive history. Beautiful car and continued good luck with her. Cheers. George.

Just getting rid of those God -forsaken yellow wires Hillar had on it made a world of difference Clint.

Ray, I remember giving an update on the work I'd done after receiving the car, and you stated something like that I'd done more work on it in a few months than Hillar did the entire time he had the car.

I bugged him to Drive it to POCI in Grand Rapids when I took my '69.He said it was overheating and refused to change the Rad.
Is there any Easier Rad to Change? I think it was really the cost of Gas.

The stock 2 core rad was plugged, so it was changed to the 3 core rad I got from Larry Kosek.  The 3 core was in my convertible for the 1st year I had the 454 in it, but eventually had a 4 core done for the convertible.  So I had a spare 3 core which fit right in place.  Seemed to run cool enough on my trip to Wichita.

Don't forget the heater core that was bypassed. I've come to believe that he didn't really know how to work on cars at all, he knew a lot about them but turning wrenches was not his thing, God rest his soul.

Many years ago, must have been around 1979/80 or so, a friend of mine in Ancaster told me of what I believe must have been this very car. He told me it had a 454.; I asked him "are you certain it was a 454, not a 455?" Yup!

By 1986 I bought a 1970 Canadian Pontiac brochure and it spelled out that the 454 was available in 345 & 390 horse versions. I think the cam was really the only difference, plus dual exhausts. Any 454 1970 Pontiac is Super Rare!

That Laurentian is a real oddball. It came with manual steering, manual drum brakes, LS4 454 w TH400, 2.56:1 axle ratio, cruise control and an AM/FM radio. What a highway cruiser it would make; the original owner used it to regularly drive to Florida from Canada as I recall hearing. Hey, it was a feature car on this site so all the info is on site.
