February 2015 Feature Car

It is my pleasure to feature Scott Jacklin's gorgeous 1968 Pontiac 2+2 for February. It's truly rare to see a '68 2+2 and ever rarer to see one as nice as this one. The 396 is icing on the cake. I've had the pleasure of seeing this car in person and it's every bit as nice as it looks in the photos. Scott shares the details:

Growing up in the 60's and 70's, I always had an attaction for big, long cars. All my friends wanted Camaros and Mustangs, but I wanted a fullsize Pontiac, Starfire, Cadillac, LeSabre (you get the idea). I compromised for awhile by having a 70 Olds Cutlass convertible back in the 90's, but as nice as that car was, it wasn't big enough.

Then the first time I ever went to the Barrie Spring swap meet, there she was in the auction and I had to have it. Unfortunately, the pocket book didn't agree. I kept in contact with the seller and over the summer we negotiated a price and it was mine. Since then, I've tracked down all the previous owners, except the original lady owner, but I did speak with her son who inherited and drove the car for awhile. He told me that the car was bought off of the Conroy lot in Vancouver in the spring of 68. By then the car had sat for several months. The car is an early build (Sept '67) but I guess the original Verdoro green wasn't very appealing. The lady that bought the car would only do so if the car was re-painted purple. Hard to believe that actually happened, but that's what the owners son told me and there is definitely evidence of the purple colour on the car. Wish I had a picture.

Anyway, the lady owner loved the big car with the big motor and tooled all around Vancouver for several years. The son eventually inherited the car, which was then sold to someone on Vancouver Island where it sat for many years. Eventually a fella from Ontario travelling in BC looking for Corvairs found it and brought it back to Ontario. It went through several more owners, each doing a little more work to the car (colour change, interior, dual exhaust etc).

Since I bought it 12 years ago, I've done a lot with the car, a little bit each year : Drum brakes, dual exhaust, tires, re-cored rad, rebuilt carb, vinyl top, carpet, minor rust, re-paint, top engine rebuild .. and on and on ..

I really love the car, especially with the original 396. The car has just over 100,000 miles on it now and it goes just about everywhere. My wife even uses it as a "truck" to get to the greenhouse every spring for flowers and plants because the  trunk is so big. I take it to lots of shows and cruise nights and never expect to win anything. However, I was pleasantly surprised to win the best GM 1966 and newer at the Barrie show this summer. That was a treat.

Here are some pics of the car during the last paint job (you can see evidence of the purple).

Love the car! Love the colour combo.

After having a '68 Parisienne in the back field (mine was a wreck), I really liked looking at the fastback lines whatever I passed it by.

Beautiful car, beautiful story. Me too, I always wanted the big ones and not the sporty Camaros & Mustangs most kids wanted. I hope you still enjoy it for many more years to come.

Hey Scott, it didn't have the original conroy dealer emblems on it by chance? I want to see what I want. Mine is a Conroy car too.

B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L.................... sweet 68 Pontiac in every way and that 396, like Todd said is icing on the cake. Your 68 has it all happening, as far as colour, engine, options and all around appeal. Continued good luck with that sweet 68 Pontiac time machine. Cheers. George.

Congratulations Scott, I have had the pleasure of seeing your car at the Barrie show Wednesday nights. The white interior goes great with the outside colour. You have a beautiful ride.

Great looking ride.....awesome that you could find its history. Completely agree on the color combo....looks fantastic. Hope you find a picture of in purple just for the old scrapbook. My wife also had me bring home some flowers and a couple pieces of sod in the trunk of the Beaumont. I nearly cried. What a guy has to do eh??!!

Maybe I'm biased but great choice for feature car. Congratulations Scott and also for a well deserved win at that Show & Shine last summer. Very nice.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the nice comments about the car. I do love it and plan on keeping it for a long time. I made a half-hearted attempt at selling it
a couple of years ago (financial crunch when the kids were in university) but I'm glad I didn't actually sell it.

"chander", it didn't come with the Conroy emblems, but I wish it had. Would love to get a set sometime.

"bjburnout", yes, I did buy this car out of Richmond Hill 12 or 13 years ago. A fella named Vince, that had an account in CP
for awhile, but I think he has dropped off. He also had a 68 Beaumont (307) for sale on here for awhile too.

It was fun taking this car to Pontiac Michigan during the Woodward Dream Cruise. It really caused alot of discussion amongst the crowd there.

Can't wait for spring.

Scott (LandShark ...)
