51 Styleline


A few years ago I had a 51 Fleetline chop top that i sold for lets just say not enough and regretted it ever since ...

I've been looking for months for a nice rider quality 50's car to replace my 69 Beaumont that i've sold last autumn.

After countless trip to see cars that where overpriced and/or good for parts and/or """modified""" in ways your mind can't even begin to comprehend the "why !!" , I came across a nice looking 51 chevy Styleline Special !

I know it will never be a show car but do i love the looks of that car !!

Sooooo ... it's not a Pontiac but heck !! It was there .... i had room ... so i bought it ! :p

I LOVE IT. The 1949 to 1954 Chev's, especially the 1951 and 1952 Chev's have always been sweet rides. My dads first car was a 1952 Chev coupe, much like yours, 216 with 3 on the tree. Beautiful ride there Michael and continued good luck with her. Here is my dads 52 Chev coupe that he bought in 1954 when he was still a single man. Cheers. George.

 Indeed ! The fact that the paint is almost brand new and chrome is all nice and shiny weighted alot in the decision ...

It's going to be my very first all original car with the 216ci and 3 speed column shift ! I've put a 305/700R4 in my last Fleetline without ever driving the original engine.

I just dont like the fact that it's still running on 6v, so i've ordered everything to convert it to 12v with a electronic distributor and some new RADIAL white walls. Aside from that ... dont think i'll be doing any modification to this one. Odometer is showing 28 000milles so the engine should be ok for a couple of rides :)

If anyone in the Montreal area is looking for some BiasPly White walls ... i'll be selling the brand new ones that's on the car.

Go easy on that Stovebolt. It is splash lubrication, not even pressure-fed. A newer six can be found for dirt cheap generally. Still though, just 28,000 miles! omfg.gif

 

The car looks great, all dechromed with holes leaded wink

If I had a stint with that car I would go for chromed reverse wheels with baby moons & blackwalls, then custom upholstery on the door panels and seats, as was the custom back in the day. I'd be tempted to store that heavy 216 and find at least a 54 or newer six with pressure lubrication and build upon that. ..Or drop in a 292 with multiple carbs!

 yhea ..... i'm more of an LS6 kinda guy .... ;) 

But those are dangerous toughts my friend ..... the path to the Resto-Mod side is filled with weeks of empty wallets and lonely nights in the garage cursing the World too a eternity of pain because the aftermarket parts you ordered dont fit or the electrical wiring diagram dont match the product you bought .

 

It's just too time/money cunsuming for me right now .... but i'm not saying it will never happen ....

So !! At last the tire season is over and i finaly get some time for myself, i've started working on the 51 last week to make it roadworthy since i have to pass the Provincial inspection since the car came from Ontario.

 

Started with the wheels and whitewalls tire last month since the car came with Polyglass whitewalls. Radial white walls where bought from Cokertires and the rim sandblasted and painted a nice candy red . 

Was contemplating the idea of buying a new steering wheel until i saw how much they where going for ....... they are insane !!! 

Sooooo ..... 3 hours of sanding , 1 hours of reparing cracks with epoxy and then sanding AGAIN !! (god i hate sanding!!)

2 layer of the same candy red base coat used for the wheels with a good clearcoat finish and i'm actually proud anough of the finish product to post it here !! :)

Also installed Flasher module and wiring today .... will be finishing averything else this week since i'm on vacation !

Thing left to do :

1: Convert to 12 volt (wiring, resistor for gas guage and heater motor, New 12v electronic Distributor , alternator...ect ..ect)

2: new brake lines

3: Repair bad floor job

4: adjust valve

5: Change fuel pump

6: make frame connector to replace one of the " K " transmission subframe

7: paint everything under the car ( nothing fancy )

8: and most probably other things since i never got it up on a car lift.....

Appointment for the Inspection is Friday so i'll be posting some photos of the work done if some of you are interested biggrin

So .... had a lot done last week !

Changed both Tie-Rods and front king pin ; rebuild ilder Arm and fabricated one of the ""holding"" cup for the pin since it was missing, wich made the idler-arm very loose !

Then did the right transmission "K"frame with 1/4 plate steel

New brake and fuel lines where made ....

All engine mounts where changed since they where old and dry .

Installed alternator and wiring with a oneway Diode on the exitation wire so that there's no electrical return to the coil .

Brand new HEI distributor

And for the Horns, i wanted to keep the original ones so i wirred them in series so that they each draw 6 volt from the new 12v system.

Just keep the driver one from touching Ground and wire the other one from the body of the driver horn .

Actualy came out almost as original !!

Installed manual backup switch and some nice bulllet style vintage motorcycle sidemarker lights as Back-up lights since i didn't want to cut a hole in the body of the car as they did back in the day's to install that option. Drilling 1/2 in the bumper filler panel is less heartbraking !!

Ordered new carpet and Sill Plates ... will be waiting for that to arrived !!

And still need to paint undercar . But all in all, very happy with the week i had ! :)

Wow! Nice car to begin with (I do like how the grille looks with the top bar painted black, I have never seen that done before but it looks sleek and unique), and lots you have done, I especially like the candy-red rims with baby moons and new wide whitesand the steering wheel turned out GREAT!

Keep up the good work! (and let Todd know when you are ready to have this be a Monthly Feature Car, eh?)
