Hurst shifter for Muncie in my 66

The more I read, the more confused I am. Does someone have an old Hurst catalogue? If so and you are willing to give me the number for the shifter and number for the installation kit?

1966 Impala would be the correct application.

Thanks.

this is '68-9, think the only difference is the earlier trans used studs to hold the arms

When I bought my rebuilt Competition Plus shifter for my 70 B-body a few years ago, I had them include the instruction sheets as seen above for prior years.   As Chevrolet didn't put a 4 speed in the B-body in 70, mine is basically a 69 installation.

I have a sheet labelled CS-4-65 that indicates it for a 65 - 67 Muncie 4 speed, 7 bolt side cover transmission.  Studs extend out of the transmission for the arms to mount on.

Another sheet is labelled CS-4-68M, for a 68 Muncie 4 speed, 7 bolt side cover transmission.  Studs extend out of the transmission for the arms to mount on.

The final sheet is labelled CS-4-69M, for a 68 Muncie 4 speed, 7 bolt side cover transmission.  Bolts screw the arms into the transmission.

From what I can tell, there is a difference between the CS-4-65 & the CS-4-68M when it comes to the reverse arm, and it looks like the chrome handle is different as well.  The CS-4-65 drawing exploded view drawing doesn't show the chrome handle being separate.  I find it unlikely it's not removable, but the drawing doesn't show any of the attaching hardware.

I saw that one but "ouch" that hurts! That would be 600 bucks by the time it's here and I still have no shifter.

My biggest worry is that I want the shifter to come out at the right spot. I want to put the stock 66 bench seat floor shift handle on the Hurst body.

If I can buy just the mounting plate I can likely find a shifter that will work I am betting.

Thanks Dave, that will help me hunt. Worst part is, I used to have a mounting plate in a box of junk. I think it looked like that one, and I think I sold it.

I really don't remember who I got my rebuilt Competition Plus shifter from, that info may be at the shop where my car is.  I'll stop by there tomorrow to see what I can get you.  In the meantime I'd suggest contacting Manchester Muncies to see what they have for a 65 - 67 rebuilt Competition Plus shifter.

I just went and looked for that plate but no luck. I had a notion after posting that I sold it that maybe I didn't sell it. I may find it yet. If so, likely all I need is a shifter body if I have the mount plate. I've got rods and levers galore.

And for those with deep pockets, here's an NOS 65 - 67 Impala Competition Plus shifter for Muncie 4 speed trans, only $1099 US.

I wonder if the member ever had a chance to install it..?

had a 4205 mount about a year ago, sold it. they come up on ebay once in awhile.

never tried it but i think you could use the more readily available chevelle shifter with this 4205 mount and it should clear the automatic trans crossmember

Hi Carl, I bought my Hurst Shifter for a bench seat from Manchester Muncies. It was completely rebuilt, rechromed old sytle stick (welded on not bolted) cost was $310 U.S. shipped to me. I bought an install kit where I work for $215, so I have $525 invested. This guy does an excellent job and stands behind his work. After a lot of googling it was suggested by many to purchase an old Hurst that has been rebuilt vs. the new Chineses ones. The bench seat Hurst you need is 391 7308. If you are wanting a Muncie Bench Seat Shifter complete with Chrome Shift Ball and Rods and can wait until spring I will be changing the one in my Chevelle. P.M. me if you are interested, my price will be a lot less than a new one.

Thanks Howard, I'll keep an eye on that one.

I am willing to bet I can make a mount plate.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I was looking on the Hurst site for a page like that but had no luck.

I was wondering if the body would be the same between the two. It would make sense for them to make stuff as universal as possible.

Do you recall Carl, was the shifter body bolted to an adapter plate or directly to the tailhousing on the Muncie?

The Hurst Competition Plus CS-4-69M shifter I have was rebuilt by a fellow in Minnesota.  I just talked to him, and he should be able to help you out.  I'll PM you his info.

Thanks very much for all the help, each one of you. I need to pick a direction on this one. I want to end up with what appears to be a stock bench seat setup. Just have to decide how to go about it!
