More Looking

Went to look at a 59 bubble top last weekend. Not enough left to restore, unfortunately. Time, bad driving and the elements have conspired to ruin it way beyond anything but "parts car" status.

Supposed to go see a 60 Pontiac wagon next week one day. biggrin  Supposed to be virtually complete and solid, but one of the big rear side windows is missing. Bet it's not easy to find. Fellow says it was a curved piece of glass. May or may not have papers.

Can't be many 1960 wagons left.no

Being a six banger, I bet it's also manual transmission, steering and brakes. Kind of keen on seeing it, though.smile

Is it a 2 door wagon? I would suspect the side glass was shared among the other GM wagons?

He didn't say, and I never thought to ask. He suggested I could order the glass on e-Bay, but I didn't bother to tell him the new e-Bay policy is "everything shipped has to be insured". I'm sure shipping glass that big with insurance is either impossible or wildly expensive.

I was going to say "crushed by snow, probably", but I'm above that sort of thing.  We're just slightly below sea level, so our day will come. biggrin

I just traded a bunch of 62 Parisienne side chrome, quarter section, seat chrome, trunk lid chrome, steering column and some generic hubcaps for a set of 64 Parisienne (or Impala) bucket seats in fair condition, and a Pontiac book from the States.
The book shows 58 Pontiac as having a two door wagon, but 59 and 60 as four door wagons only.

Has anyone actually seen a two door 60 Pontiac wagon?
I know I've seen Chevs, but not Ponchos.

P.S. I'm also supposed to be looking at a 58 Pontiac four door sedan next week. I usually only buy four doors as parts cars, but you never know :) I won't rip apart a solid car if I don't have to. If the price is cheap......if it has reg.....hmm.

Hey...409Safari....cool picture you sent in previous box. Nice blow-up of wagon tail end. If I end up with the car, I think I'll print that off.

At POCI conventions I have been asked many times (by guys who found out I'm Canadian) if I know of any 2 door wagons. They all tell me 57 was their last year of a 2 door Pontiac wagon.

According to the parts catalog, 1960 is the last year here in Canada on Strato Chief model only....

Here's what Carl is talking about.  I took these pics of an abandoned 1960 Pontiac wagon in NS 18 years ago.  The site has since been developed and now contains a VW dealership.

Yes, I believe that to be true for Canada.

How does a car end up in that condition? That's beyond brutal. Even tougher than the fifty-nine I looked at.

Hey Leo, are you out west here, or back East?

I'll let you know what happens. I may have to choose between a semi-driveable 58 Pontiac four door sedan, and the wagon, which may or may not have reg. My luck dictates that they both won't have reg, but I aim to try for a peek.

I saw some pictures of a 58 sedan four-door, and I thought they were a neat looking car. May have to really ponder, unless the fellow offers up a package deal.

I won't get excited, though, as he's just as likely to throw me from the property. He doesn't need money, just having fun with them.

Typical Nova Scotia.  Lots of road salt, lots of humidity and rain, car sitting outside on the dirt.  Lots of cars from that period had body and frame rot at 6 and 7 years old around here.

That's why most of them were crushed 30 - 40 years ago.  I remember in my high school days from early '80s that there were virutally no cars from the '50s left on the road, and very few from the sixties.  Went to Calgary in 1983 and couldn't believe my eyes at the old iron on the roads out there.  Wanted to buy a bunch and bring 'em back but alas, no money... biggrin

Out west! LOL.
I work at a Chrysler dealer and we actually stock subframes for 2007-newer Calibers and Compass. Chrysler actually extended the warranty on front and rear subframes on 2007 models to 10 years.. We've replaced a ton of them.

Yep, it's true.  2 years ago I saw the subframe of a Caliber owned by a friend of a friend that rotted out where the control arms bolt on.  It let go while they were driving and they were lucky that they were able to pull over to the side of the road without incident.

The east coast is "the land of rust".  Much worse than areas typically referred to as the "rust belt".  Heck, stuff is so rusty out here I've seen cars advertised locally as "Ontario car"... biggrin

Years ago I had a 60 Strato Chief with a three on the tree standard. I remember I got used to the shifting, and drove it quite a bit. Don't know if I'd still enjoy it or not. Might prefer to cut a stick shift into the floor. Hmmm.....

Love the 60 wagon wrap around back windows. Dash seems a little plain compared to the 62 63 64 dashes. Lots of chrome on those.
