Agreed. When I had issues with my 66 top it was low on fluid. You might be able to simply pop the filler and squirt in some fluid. However, make sure you know what fluid is in the unit. In my case I believe it is brake fluid?

First of all check the the lines and cylinders for leakage. Unfortunately most leaking components will need to be replaced. They are not  rebuild able.  It is quite likely 66 is tranny fluid. Make sure what you have. Its not recommended that you mix he two fluids as it will premature damage the seals unless the system has been totally flushed. Also don't over fill; only about 2/3 full.

. . Ok, , I was under the impression that the reservoir was fullest when the top is in the lowered position. . Is that wrong? ?

. . One way or the other there will be a substantial amount more fluid in the reservoir. . It takes a lot more fluid to extend a cylinder then to retract it. . When retracted the stem takes up a lot of the area within the cylinder. .
