This is a great car, top shelf styling for that era. We had a 61 that was the same colour, even had a 261 as well.

About the engine choice in this car, let's remember that the small block V8 was in its infancy to start the 59 model year grown from 265 to 283 CID. Canadians were always a frugal group and Pontiacs already had a premium 6 cylinder over the Chevrolet counterpart. The 261 was just 4 cubic inches shy of the original small block and as already posted only about 20 HP less that the V8 although torque was better at lower rpms. Many old timers tell of similarly equipped cars 261 vs 265 that the 261 would actual be a quicker car. In any case the Registry shows that 63% of 1959's were 261's so in reality it was still the engine of choice for Canadian Pontiac buyers and I'd say this probably didn't turn around until after 1962 when the 230 replaced it and the 283 then became more attractive. I saw my old man bury the speedo on our '61 - 120 mph.

I agree       I was in a couple of old 261's that would out run a "new" 283 v8

It is a nice looking car. When I was a kid a neighbor had a similar car that he put chrome reverse wheels on. It filled out the rear wheelwell a bit. When you stand behind a Canadian 59 thats when you really notice the Chevy frame and axle length compared to the USA model.

"Infancy" and "new" do not mean the same.  In its first year of introduction the 283 shared the option sheet with the 265. Our Registry shows that  the 261 comprises 72% of the cars listed, in 58 when the 283 was the only sbc V8 the registry still shows 70% of the cars as 261 engines. Canadians were clearly hesitant and therefore slow to adopt the sbc V8 in Pontiacs.

The inline 6 was the engine of choice around my 'hood as a kid in Nova Scotia. East Coast gas prices were always highest in the country, combined with the reliability reputation the "Stovebolt" 261 had and the purchase price with a 6 wasn't much more than a Chevy. Sometimes on par. Pontiac may have been identical underneath to a Chev but were more upscale body and interior wise.
But by the mid 60's the 283 started taking over.
This '59 would be cooler with a stock 348 and 3 speed bolt action!

My old '60 Bel Air had a worn-out 261 "truck" engine in it with a 3 on the tree, and I have to say that I was surprised at how torquey it was.  My street had steep hills running perpendicular on either end and the car just took to it like a mountain goat going up the steepest part of the hill from a dead stop.  It actually felt like it pulled better than a couple of other V8s I had around the same time, at least until they got going.

I used to race 283 powergilde cars and beat them all the time in a 55 Laurentian with a 261  3 speed. It was not only the engine but the entire driveline combination that made the car so so fast. The 3.70  rear diff gears really pulled off the line. The 55;s were a little lighter than the following years of production full size cars so that also helped. My car now has 99,565 miles and still runs very strong and does not burn any oil bit does leak a little bit. I stopped a couple of weeks ago to help a stranded driver who's transmission was so low on oil it would not move. I gave the gentleman a ride to get some tranny fluid and he was amazed the car had a six cylinder in it. Turned out he was a minister of a non denominational church. After adding 4 litres of oil the tranny worked again and I followed him home to make sure he was ok.
