The parts book says this for powerglide-

6451072 (replaced by 6478131) 78.63" long

It's pretty basic as far as GM cables from the 60's go. Threaded nut both ends, big end at the trans, small end at the speedo head. You can buy a cable only (n housing) but sometimes the housing gets a bit rough inside and then the new cable has issues right away. Best to replace the whole unit, and they're not that expensive.

I sell ATP cables at work. They list a Y-803 for your car. It's 83" long which I'm sure will work but you'll just have to use up a bit of the slack somewhere in it's travels. It should cost you around 25 bucks.

No problem, let us know how it goes when you do it in case anyone else is needing to do it.

I think the keys to survival on those things (based on experience) is-

-Keep the housing away from heat, e.g. exhaust pipes etc.

-Avoid kinks

-White lithium grease only on the cable, making sure it's fresh stuff, nice and light, not that old caked, hardened stuff like lithium can get with age.

Yes, I would take it apart, wash it tons with alcohol (Brakecleaner) and some nice fresh lithium on it. I that's about all you can do.

Anyone who's in a cold climate who ever put grease other than lithium will have seen how the speedo head jumps in cold weather when the grease is too thick!
