Console Resto

So decided to pull the console to clean and repaint, will get some new parts and clean up the rest, will repaint with gloss black and not flat as I like that better ( die hard's cringing now) will get a new rubber strip for the shifter handle and replace the bulbs with LED's, that whole console light setup will be replaced, some places it say's use vinegar and baking powder to clean the console? think I'll use Mothers instead, suggestions welcome here from anyone who has done this before.

Cleaning the console now and I must say it is not easy, those damn little grooves full of crap and corrosion, the old man who owned this car before me or whom ever fixed it was a moron but at least it's not messed with too much and is mostly stock and untouched, you can see by how bad the carpet looks that it is the original.

Nice shiny consoles really stand out in a car's interior. It'll look great! I don't like the flat black either, but I'd probably would paint it with a semi-gloss instead of the gloss.

Let us know about the festoon bulb you go with. It will be the same for everybody's GM console cars from this era.

Using vinegar lemon juice and baking soda now after Mothers and Liquid Lustre both failed and it seems to be helping to loosen the crud, still it's not an easy process here, could take all winter to get these clean, damn.

This may sound weird, but try toothpaste and a toothbrush, then warm water. Gentle abrasive and rinses out easily.

This stuff is basically corrosion so it does scrape off, now using Metal Clear which is a CLR product, say's not to leave it on more than 3 minutes, so after about 5 it starts to work, again this is not a fast process and takes reapplying so should be done around Christmas.Nothing else really touches it so this is the best I have found so far.

Getting there, still a ways to go before painting but slowly I am getting to it, now using steel wool and Brasso mostly, new shift strip, rear lens, and LED's on the way!

Look at the shifter in this picture, does something appear wrong or different, not really that noticeable. This is the before shot, quite a mess.

Yes you spotted it, the lens is there that's just a reflection.Plate was cut to accommodate  the 350 Turbo trans, one thing the guy did right.

Doing the install today, last owner left power to the console light and it was just sitting in there, lucky it didn't start a fire, which would be under the console, that would be bad. Now it is properly soldered and clipped in to the correct location as it should be.
