Anyone got a parts interchange book for this tranny number?

I just bought some NOS parts to build up a 3 speed transmission for the '50, but now am questioning whether I have the right casing. The right number for the car is Group 4.103 # 591746. (fitment '49-'54)

I have 2 trannys both with case number 591747. I cannot find application of this number anywhere in my '42-' 58 Canadian Pontiac interchange manual. The mainshaft I bought is the right number, but comparing it to the gearbox I have apart it is shorter. Any clues??

I'm wondering if the #591747 is Chevy only.

"The ID numbers needed are stamped into the case at the front edge of the cover.
The number would begin with a M or S (plant where made) than three or four numbers which are the month and day. The year is not used.
The late 1953 began with M 8-18 and S-8-26 which would be Aug. of 1953. The raised casting number on the case would be 591747 for a car 591615 for a truck.

Good info. Thanks!

So I guess I have '53 transmissions? The stamping however on the one that's apart reads E 29 2. Maybe that means Feb. '54??

It's quite conceivable that at least one trans.dates around there because I swapped out my original motor in 1975 with a '53-54 and it came with a tranny.

The puzzling thing is the different mainshaft lengths. The photo shows the NOS shaft w/box (right part according to the book) marked 'long' by someone,

but the one beside it is original from the 591747 case. Perhaps the 591746 case is shorter??

Hi Murray

By any chance did anyone get back to you with more information on the shafts in your transmission?

I found the part number 3690870 in my factory parts book No 212 1951 edition and it is listed under two sections Chevrolet and Pontiacs

1) 1949 -51 / All exc AT.  A  Main Shaft 3690870, mates with B counter shaft 590827 and C Reverse Shaft 590831

2) 1949-51 / 20-22 exc AT A Same as above , B same as above , C same as above ,

Observation, in No 2 is the 20 / 22, is this  reflecting the model of the car ? Like mine is a model 22 -07

My listings don't show 1952-53 , sorry

Dale

Hi Dale:
Nobody other than you replied, but 22-07 is : Series 22 Model 07 (Coupe- Dynamic 2 Door).
Mine is 22-71 Series 22- Model Sedan Delivery.
The 20 & 22 series were on a 115" wheelbase. The series 25 & 27 were on a 120" WB.
Take a look at the first few pages of your parts book which may have the breakdowns. My book is No.445 ('42'-'56) and that's where I'm finding these specs.
