Real difficulty putting gas in my car at modern pumps


I don't know if our vapor-recovery, auto-off gas station nozzles here in the US are any different than up there, but I'm now finding it almost impossible to put gas in my '69.  I have a '69 Camaro with the tank behind the rear plate and its a similar story.

It continually kicks back after (if you're lucky) a second or two of dispensing.

I've tried every angle except upside down, different amounts of insertion (settle down, kids) any pretty much anything else I can think of.

I presume others are in the same boat, but I'm wondering if there are any tricks that would let me get 20 gallons into this thing in an afternoon!

Is it always the same service station you are using? Sounds like it's air locking.

Even my wife's car (2014 Camry) and my truck (2006 GMC) do that if you insert the nozzle all the way. I just back the nozzle off a bit and it works perfect.

It's not the size of the nozzle, it's the amount of gas flow in it.blankstare

I have trouble at most stations, but the most recent one was almost impossible - I'll try some variety and see if I can find a less sensitive pump nearby.

Ya, it could be the amount of pressure that the gas is being pumped.

I had trouble getting parked just right , so the hose would "reach" the filler at the rear      

 

If you can't get it to take gas, I think you have a problem.....  Try filling from home with a fuel can....  Just to check

The 73 LeMans filler neck is behind the plate in the rear bumper and its pretty low and the angle it very slight so I've got the same problem.

What works for me is turning the nozzle sideways and barely inserting it in the filler neck so that plenty of air can get in around the filler neck and nozzle. I have to be careful not to let any gasoline escape so a half grip on the trigger is about all I'll use otherwise there is a back splash which will click off the pump. On another note it is near impossible to fill the tank with a Gerry-Can since I can't get the can on enough of an angle once the spout is inserted. To use a Gerry-Can I need two people and a hose and funnel, insert hose in filler neck, insert funnel in hose then fill funnel which is held above the bumper.

I haven't had any problems filling my 1970 model year cars in the USA.  The filler neck would be exactly the same as your 1969.

Maybe it's state by state then, or we have some particularly troublesome new models. It's been the last couple of years it got tough, and then this year near impossible. Both the Camaro and the Pontiac!

Interesting, never paid much attention to it. I end up in Washington ever once in awhile and haven't recalled a problem. Will probably get down there a little more now with one of my kids moving back to Seattle.

I have a similar problem when the tank gets to about 3/4 full but no issues below this level. I have no choice but to insert the nozzle at an angle, then go very slowly. Then whoever is behind me must think the car takes 300 liters or so because they wonder when the heck am I going to finish!

My filler is behind the plate and I have to get down on one knee so that I can hold the nozzle so that it doesn't shut off

Slow and easy.

By far the worst car I ever had for taking fuel was my 58 Plymouth. The filler was on the drivers rear. The first time I filled it gas came shooting out and I was covered in it.
As for my 69 Laurentian I never had a problem filling it.

I have the same problem with both the 52 Pontiac and the 72 Avanti !!! Pontiac's filler is on left 1/4 & the pump nozzle doesn't have enough bend to allow it into the filler neck, really slow to fill & kicks back constantly, Avanti filler very high on left side in roof sail, but kicks back too, long slow process of getting the nozzle at correct angle to fill both cars up and cleaning up the spill down the sides of vehicles!! After Cap & trade tax comes in we will be "wringing" out the clean up cloth back into the tank!!!
