Drove my Pontiac 100mph up a mountain today!

I decided that the trailer queen needed some serious shakedown miles, so today I took it from Seattle up through the Snoqualmie mountain pass (I-90 East) and then back sort of in a tourist fashion.

Traffic flow was about 85mph, faster than normal around these parts, so I just stayed in the slow lane (at 85!) most of the time.  Going up I moved over to the fast lane for a while to see what it was like, crested 100, satisfied my curiosity, and went back to the "slow" lane.

It didn't overheat, it didn't die, it just drove.  If cars had brains it'd have been a happy day for it!

Cars from the 60s don't really feel like they're ready for modern interstate traffic, at least not at that speed.  But I did get more used to it as the miles went by. 

110 miles (approx) might not sound very far, but its 25% of the mileage on the car!  I had planned to show it, decided I didn't really like car shows, so have never shown it.  Then when it was last month's feature car I realized "Hey, I should just drive it!".  So I did.

Then when I got home I parked it in the driveway, where it's 88F right now, and let it idle for 20 minutes to see if it'd overheat, but it never got above 220F, so happy with that.  I do have an aux electric fan that kicks in around 210F to help.

Perfect! That's what these cars are for- driving and enjoying. If our parents could drive them 365 days a year without issue we surely can drive ours 500 miles a year.

I agree, while a big block easily gets to 100 mph or more you're out of your league with modern cars all around. The playing field isn't the same, they stop faster, handle better even accelerate in most cases better. I usually take my own up past 100 every season , just once, scares the crap out of me but oh does it ever sound so nice.

When I had my 66 468 Strato Chief .... with the 350 turbo auto in it and with the 2:73 racing gears, and  I used to run it to 100 mph in 2nd gear      

In the 3rd gear the speedo would not tell me how fast it was going confuse    it just disappeared way down out site....

Mine feels great at this speed all day which was keeping up with traffic on the transcanada but at 100 I still do get a bit nervous.  The car, on the other hand seems pretty calm.

I'm known for my heavy foot, and I've had my cars doing 100 mph uphill, downhill, around corners, through tunnels, etc. etc. etc.    

Find yourself a nice wide open stretch of road and let it fly.

When she's done, my '56 496, with the 4.11 gears, 5000 rpm will be about 105 mph (I will not try to take my '64 283 up that high, even with the 3.08 gears smile)

In the meantime - way to go, guys! Glad you're having fun with your ~50 year old cars.

Always nice to get them up there once in a while and have no shimmy/shake. Good piece of mind and a little fun too! Had mine on the inland hwy (limit is 120) took her up to 140 for a bit and could take my hands off the wheel,smooth and straight. Oh, thats 140 Km's not mph!
