Is a transistorized ignition setup a rare and/or desirable option?

I noticed yesterday that a guy in Calgary has posted on kijiji a transistorized module and distributor and harness (I think) that he says were taken off a 1966 Custom Sport 427 4 speed car years ago.  Being an inveterate option chaser i phoned and made a deal for it.

Was I nuts?

Also would like to find out more about the car it came off. Has anybody heard of one of those still existing?

I know they had them in 63 for the American Pontiacs. I owned a 67 Pontiac wagon with TI also.

I wanted to let you know about that one when I saw the ad here but just too much on the brain, I forgot. Good score Ken. I was told there were 66 B body Canadian cars in 1966 that got that option. My factory 4 speed car that I had with the 427 is one of those cars. K66 on the build sheet. That thing worked flawless when I owned the car for 8 years in the 80's. Very cool.

ok kids, get along.

As for the transistorized ignition, I believe it was the hot thing of the day.  I have a buddy with an extremely nice 65 Catalina 2+2 that was quite excited to add it to his car.

had a bloke from sydney who enters his camaro in historic racing bought an old accel transistorised ignition system and mechanical tach, the distributor had a mechanical tach drive, from me. Really wanted a GM unit. Bit of a rarity he reckons, especially in australia......

From our perspective here in the Great White North the K66 Transistor Ignition was offered on the following Canadian-built Chevrolets & Canadian Pontiacs:

1965 - L79 327 350-horse Acadian, Beaumont, Chevy II & Chevelle

1966 - L72 427 425-horse full size Chevrolet & Pontiac

1966 - L34 396 360-horse Malibu SS & Beaumont Sport Deluxe

It had a low installation rate on already rarely ordered engines. In other words, very rare! I hate to overuse that word but it applies here.

I am not sure about the earlier 409 cars.

At any rate, here is a good link to a place that has been around for a while that offers new & rebuilt transistor components for these systems: http://www.tispecialty.com/index.htm

Cam, you missed the 396 B bodies for 66. I suspect, but can't prove it, that the low horse 427 could be had with it as well, it would make sense since 396 had it.

Carl, I went ahead and checked the 1966 AMA specs for the 1966 full-size Chevrolets. Sure enough they said that K66 was available with the 325-horse 396, 390 & 425-horse 427. They also said it couldn't be had on the 396 with a Powerglide. I would believe it if it was offered in Canada just the same as the U.S., plus  the Canadian Pontiacs with those same engines.

When I checked the 1965 AMA specs for the big cars they didn't elaborate other than to say K66 was V8 only. They just never said which V8s, and it was made more obscure by the fact that mid-year the Mark IV big block 396s took over for the 409s in the U.S.  The AMA specs also ignore the early production 1965 409 cars. I have the U.S. mid-year revision brochure and it doesn't even mention transistorized ignition.
