69 Parisienne wire burning smell


Last week I took my car for a quick spin for the first time in over a year.

The fuel gauge did not work on start and the Alternator light was just dimly on.

I just got back from a run to Canadian Tire, 20 min with 5 min of highway fun.(not the fastest car on the road biggrin)

As I exited the off I could smell wires burning somewhere.

The smell is definitely under the dash and not under the hood.

The alt light no longer glows.

There in no changes in wiring under the dash as everything is original.

I cant find any signs of trouble such as melted wires

Voltage regulator ?

Any thoughts ?

No, this is the lowest cluster without a clock.

The tester I used under the hood shows normal function at idle for both the regulator and the Alternator.

I wont be able to get back to the car until Sunday so I was hoping for some clues to look for.

Here's a few things to check.  

1.  You've mentioned the Alternator light a couple times.   With the key in the on position (not started, just in the on position), is the Alt light on?  It should be.

2.  Does the Alt light go out when you start the car?

3.  Does your fuel gauge work at all?

4.  Are the other idiot lights and dash light working?

5.  Are the headlights / signal lights / tail lights / brake lights working?

6.  Are the fuses in the fuse block the proper amperage?

Where I'm steering you is to find out what's not working, and go from there.

Now I'm going to ask my usual question: "Do you have a service manual for your car?"  The service manual includes wiring diagrams.

The Alt light would light up brightly on start and dim but stay on.

All other electrical operations work well.

Not that I have many.

All fuses seem to be correct and operational.

One note, The "de-optioned" car seems to have an add on interior light system that plugs in to the acc on the fuse panel.

This system is in very poor condition and stayed on a lot so I disconnected it.

I removed the regulator and checked ground and found it to be a newer replacement part and it smelled burnt.

I spent the afternoon searching for a new voltage regulator.

I found one at CARQUEST on Wellington Road South in London, Ontario listed as 69 Chev Truck.

They only had one.

I only had time to install and not to test drive.

No Alt light but the fuel gauge must be a separate issue.

I'll get more time to play with this Monday

Yep, I don't have a service manual.

hope you have kill switch on battery or remove battery cable when unattended don't want t odestroy that classic
