Hurst shifter for my Strato Chief


My lucky day!

I got a nice parcel in the mail today. A friend had a Hurst Competition Plus for a Muncie in a 66 B body bench seat and he didn't want it any more. He is going back to an original shifter in his car, so he sold me his Comp Plus. Now for sure I have to do the Muncie conversion! No pics, we just moved a few days ago (just got internet today) I don't even know where my camera is!

Anyway, I"m real thrilled to have a nice proper Comp Plus Hurst for my bench seat car.

 I have to agree.  I'll be disappointed if this turns into yet another hot rod or clone or whatever.  There are not enough original untouched cars left out there IMHO and too many high-school dream cars that get hot rodded and sold after a couple of years (not saying that this is your plan, Carl) after the builder becomes bored with it.

But it's your money and your car - enjoy it as you will.  None of my business really, other than offering my 2¢.  I'll get over it.  wink

It would not be a hot rod, at least in the modified sense. I would remove the original carpet and put it on the shelf. Remove the original 3 speed linkage
/steering column and put it on the shelf. The only thing that would be changed on the car that would be necessary to repair if it was to be returned to original would be one small floor patch, which I could do in such a way that it would be virtually undetectable.

As far as the 427 swap, there is NO modifications needed to do the swap that would change the originality if it was ever to be returned to stock. Remove the 283. put it under the bench and drop in a stone stock 427, cosmetically correct for a 66 Strato Chief. All bolt in, not butchering.

The only two things I "might" ever do to this car will be the small floor hole for a shifter and I am quite sure I will install the factory tach I have for it. I will not be hacking this car to change a bunch of stuff.

I agree with you guys, I don't like seeing original cars modified but I don't see this as butchery. I am actually thinking a 283 4 speed might be kind of cool too...

Kind of a catch 22......like a 50 year old virgin (never been touched)! Sweet 50 year old orig car, but can be put back to bone stock, no hacking etc! I'd keep the piece of floor you cut out,just in case. But your car...have fun with it, don't think your retracting from the original too much as long as it can be put back to the way it was at a later date. You might want to put the 66 on the top when removing the trans.....pain in the a$$ when on floor!!winkbiggrin

Excellent plan! Best of both worlds - a blast to drive now, and if you ever wanted to take it back to stone stock, no problem!

 It's a good plan, Carl, and I should really keep my opinions to myself, but you know nobody is ever going to take out a 427 4-speed and put a 283 3-on-the-tree again.  Once it's done it's done.  If you ever go to sell it you will get more with the 427 in it, and the buyer will not go through all that work to make the car worth less than before.

But really, who are we saving these cars for?  The younger generation mostly has no interest in them.  These cars are in our memories and you should do what makes you happy.  The next generation won't care whether it's original or not.  Don't listen to guys like me.  smile

Do what you want Carl, it's a nice car, but not 1 of 3 or anything. Most museums are already full of the ultra rare milestone cars. The rest should be built to be driven IMHO. If that means LS, overdrive auto, 4 wheel discs...so be it. 427 and 4 speed, wicked! I think sometimes people forget who owns the car, and is paying the bills to build, modify and/or use the car.

It's not like you're debating whether or not to add a mustache to the Mona Lisa with a sharpie marker...

57 Patfinder is right. It's your car and your money. Do what you want with it. I apologize for offering my opinion - it was a gut reaction to the idea of messing with the originality of the car. I get too caught up in the caretaker mindset, and sometimes forget that this hobby should be about fun rather than preserving history. Enjoy it as you wish, and post pics!

 i don't think anyone should apologize for having and offering an opinion. Certainly my opinion is not worth more than yours, it's just a different opinion. I have struggled with the same caretaker mindset on my '57 Pathfinder. I've slowly come to the point where seeing it running/driving/being enjoyed in any form is better than it sitting a day longer than it has to. It's already sat for 47 years, the poor thing.

Very valid point made about it never being converted back once it would be a 427 4 speed though. Who would ever want to?!

Carl great addition to your pristine original.
- nothing stirs up the juices more quickly / than hearing the big block rumple (427) while gripping the Hurst Comp Plus shifter
- sitting in the drivers seat & turning the key / one foot on the clutch pedal, other on the Hurst handle
^^ Brings an instant smile, the felling never gets old / nothing better !!

PS - you going with an aluminum "T" handle or a white shifter ball (similar to Muncie original) ?

Most definitely the white ball. To me, the T handle belongs in race cars. My only regret is that it's the flat stick and I prefer the round ones but I'll get used to it!

If it helps anything, this shifter came from an original L72 Impala. Wonder if that makes it worth more???!!!

you can bolt a round shaft handle of your choice on to that shifter .. I did on my 65 lemans..

They do make an adapter for the Muncie handles that bolt downwards.
