1968 Grande Parisienne with 396 Engine placed with 2 speed auto

My 1968 Grande Parisienne has a terrific 396 engine in it (which goes like stink), but I'm curious as to whether or not it is common to see that big block tied to a 2 speed automatic? I would have pictured a 3 speed auto instead in my mind as a more reasonable choice. It's definitely original equipment as I bought the car from the original owners. Any thoughts on that? Thanks.....Doug.

From what I've seen with 396 cars I've purchased, a Glide is rare. I've only ever had 400's behind a big block, but they are out there.

I am not 100% on this but I think Ken's yellow 66 Grande 396 was a Glide.

In the Beaumont/Chevelle in 66, that was the only automatic behind a 396.

Yeah mine was a Powerglide behind a 396 and I think they were available behind a 396 in 67 too.  I'll have to look through the literature. The Powerglide used behind the 396 was a heavy duty one with extra clutch packs if I remember right so don't toss it.

Would likely be fairly rare.

1968 was the last year for such a combo. They work better together than they should because the 396 has enough brute force to drive it and it does not mind winding out. It was pretty common to see a 'glide behind a 396 in the U.S. on the 65s.

Corvettes used a Powerglide behind the 427 400-horse in '67. They also were used in 3/4 ton pickups as late as 72, though the TH400 became available in the pickups for '67 (even behind a 250 six!)

Personally.....I'm a 'glide fan....

They are light, simple and really efficient......and the self-starting feature is pretty unique....to GM.

And WERE the #1 choice for MOST GM/chevy drag racers...at one point...

My buddy's 67 Malibu SS came with the 350 hp 396 and glide. Thought that was an odd combo. But most drag racers use the glide as a base for there cars in the bracket classes.

Yes, in my 67 Owner's Manual it talked about being able to push start a car with a Powerglide. I don't think any other automatics could have that done (never mind that you probably had to be going 30 mph...)

They were quite light and had low rotational mass (which is efficient) but had a fairly bad ratio spread (if you've got the horsepower and / or torque it isn't a problem).

I'm keeping the glide in my Chevelle despite all the arguments favoring an upgrade. Stone stock. It is astonishing that GM kept the Powerglide in production through March 1973; Mopar ditched the 2-speeds after 1959, Ford didtched the Ford-O-Matic after 64. Yet today there is good support for the Powerglide (not like the Dynaflows & Turboglides).

Cam, can you check your manual again? I don't think that feature was still available in 67. I think by then the rear pump wasn't in a Powerglide and without it you can't push start a powerglide.

To add to this, I think it still worked in 66 but I need to check the books to be sure.

You are right Carl. According to the GM of Canada 1967 Preliminary New Product Information that went to dealers and Mechanics The first statement under Power glide says, "All Powerglide units have been revised to remove the rear pump assembly. "

Really fascinating book actually. They also make reference to the K66 Option (Transistor Ignition) saying that it was no longer available in passenger cars but only trucks.

You know, I was surprised to see it still included in the owner's manual for the very reason you stated. When the pump moved back, the ability to bump start should have ended. I think the front pump died when the cast iron Powerglide died after '62.

No, I'm sure it went till at least 65 and I think 66.

I know 64 had it because I towed a 64 wreck I bought and it pulled hard. It was crashed. I didn't realize the shift linkage was bent. I put the column in neutral on the indicator but it was in drive and I cooked the engine pulling it about 45 miles in gear...

The Chevelle parts book lists a rear pump until 66.

Certainly a major faux pas on GM's part to list push starting Powerglides in 67!

I was considering on moving it along as I've had for almost 30 years and have had no storage for it all that time. It's been a hassle moving it around all these years. It's only got 60,000 miles on it, but it's taking a beating these last few years. It had 53,000 on it when I got it in 88 or so. I'd like to find out just how rare that engine transmission combo is before I pull the plug on it and turn it into cash. I think I might try contacting that fellow in Toronto that sells the data/info sheets. Thanks for everyone's input though, much appreciated.

I don't think the 2 speed will affect your selling price either way....it IS what it IS.....

Whoever buys your car...will buy it for the condition......NOT how many speeds the transmission has...JMO..

I agree. A powerglide wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if the car was nice.
