American diversion... 1969 Bonneville Brougham

I know it's a US car, and this is Canadian Poncho, but it's sort of the only good fullsize Pontiac forum around and I now have both US and Canadian cars, so:  I picked this one up at the Mecum auction in Florida yesterday.  It should be getting shipped up to Seattle (a long way, about as far as you can go within the continental US).  I've sill never seen the car in person!

I had it documented through PHS so I know the original equipment; it even includes the original rally wheels, automatic C60 temp control, and so on.  Not as highly optioned as North's car, which has pretty much everything, but similar interior.

The Brougham brings a few extra appointments, including full leather in the convertibles, where your only two choices were gold and black (and I've never seen an original black yet).

Otherwise, it's the standard US fare: 428 360hp.  Tilt, Power disc brakes, deluxe belts, shoulder belts, dual exhaust, tinted glass, auto climate control, whitewall upsize tires, stereo radio, Rally2 wheels, variable ratio power steering, HD battery, and some minor stuff.  Has cruise but the underhood stuff, at least, is modern.

There are two "weird" things about the car:  (a) it has Cadillac-style rear ashtrays, which I've seen in another 1970 Bonneville convertible.  I think it was a late year change maybe.  But it also has a 1970 instrument cluster with woodgrain trim, which I assume is just wrong and should be fixed.  It appears to have the non-chrome Astro vents, which are either wrong or it's an entire 1970 dash (but it's got a 1969 glovebox lock).

Yep, the toughest decision in the first 2 minutes will be whether the dice or the black floor mats go first!

Beautiful! Good for you.

Really, by the looks it should drive just like a new car.

Question; The mesh over the cowl openings..is that original?

 Good man....,

I've got a car for those floormats.....if they are not keepers...

Now I thought ALL 65-70 Pontiac 4bbl V-8s came with chrome valve covers...and a chrome air cleaner lid....?

chrome air cleaner lid and valve covers were only found on "performance" type 4 bbl engines in the late 60's. In 69 for example only the following applications had chrome dress up:

1..Firebird 400
2..GTO except 2 bbl
3..GP with 428-370 or 428-390
4..428-390 in fullsize cars
5..Sprints

The GTO used a dual snorkel and the other chrome lid air cleaners used a large single snorkel. The sprint used a specific chrome lid air cleaner with a larger snorkel but the cam cover was not chromed. Firebirds and GTO's with Ram Air still had chromed valve covers but not air cleaner lids.

The rest of the 4 bbl 69 Pontiacs did not have chrome dress up including the 350HO, 400 4bbl in GP and big cars, the big car 428-360.

In 70 the chrome dress up list was pared back heavily, no GP's or fullsize engines were offered with chrome. However the 455 HO in the GP and the big cars now came with a non chromed dual snorkel air cleaner.

In 71 no engines were offered with chrome dress up.

We always see the ram air set ups so here are the different non ram air 69 air cleaners on American Pontiacs:

Here is the 2bbl version found on all 265 horse 350's and 265 and 290 horse 400's in Fbirds, A bodies, GP's and big cars.

2015-01-14 019c.jpg

The "base" 4bbl version found on the 350 horse 400 in GP and big cars and the 340 horse 400 and 360 horse 428 in big cars

2015-12-01 041.JPG

Next is the 350 HO air cleaner in the 325 horse 350 4bbl found in Fbirds and the 330 horse 350 in A bodies (These cars used the large snorkel design but did not have any chrome)

2014-06-30 003.JPG

The 330 and 335 horse Firbird 400, GP's with 428 (370 or 390 horse HO) and the 390 horse 428 HO in big cars had the chrome dress up and the hi perf single snorkel

2016-07-29 473.JPG

The 350 horse 400 GTO was the only application that used a dual snorkel version, the 69 dual snorkel is unique in that it had the snorkels further apart than the 70-72 version to clear the 69 cruise control actuator

2006-09-17 005.JPG

last is the 69 Sprint with a 230 horse 250 engine (I can't find a good pic of the non sprint air cleaner but it has a black lid and a longer and narrower snorkel

And -none- of the Canadian cars had any chrome on the engine, correct? I have my 2+2 dressed as follows, but assume it to be incorrect (but I built this car the way it "should" have been built based solely on what I like):

(Edit:  Actually now I have the correct non-Thermac 4-speed, single-snorkel air cleaner on it.  Still have a chrome lid and valve covers though, which it should not).

I noticed that the Canadian cars with the chevy 350's have air cleaners that are identical with the 2 or 4 bbl, same airfilter I imagine.  The picture is of my 69 with the 350-300 but my friends 69 2+2 with the 2bbl 350-250 has an identical looking aircleaner with only the carb opening being different I assume?

What a beautiful car congratulations. As for floor mats I put in a complete set or clear ones. They protect but you can see the carpet colour through the mats.

The 67 B body 396/427 cars had chrome valve covers I believe. Or was it just the 427's? I think that's how it was.

Thanks Carl. Funny how they got cheaper the later you went into the 60s on almost all fronts. I thought it was just dashboards!

A rider brought a classic car selling magazine on the bus on Thursday.

200 pages of everything under the sun and I flip to...

69 bonni.jpg

It just took me 20 minutes find it again.

I'm sure glad I don't go to auctions !

Please enjoy that beauty smile

Thanks for posting! There are quite a few Bonneville convertibles out there, but finding a Bonneville Brougham has proven tough. I only know of two (this included, and another member's example) in decent condition. I found a wrecked parts car, but otherwise that's it for Brougham convertibles. I think they were more old-man-mobiles built into green 4-doors, not too many flash Brougham convertibles for whatever reason. And I've been scanning eBay and auctions for about 5 years off and on for one.

I checked the parts book.

Interesting.

It says only a 2+2 with a 427 had chrome covers. That would make those covers pretty rare!

No mention of chrome covers for any other B bodies.
