ok did some tinkering on the 49 tonite and at the stage where its time to get the shift linkages attached.So I don't think they've ever been apart up at the column,i just undid the linkages at the transmission when I pulled it out.Now I re attached the lower linkages at the transmission tonite,think I had it in neutral to reattach but now I cannot seen to shift any gears at all.In the manual it shows the shifter about in the 2 to 4 o clock position but mine goes up to almost twelve o clock.There is also a retuen spring somewhere on the column by the shift linkages if the manual is correct.Anybody got any pics of a car with the 3 on the tree.Hopefully something simple but a little stumped right now.
Brian when I got my car same thing shifter at about 12 o'clock and not easy to shift. What I did was to make sure the shift rods went to the proper shifting arm at the tranny first. Made sure tranny was in neutral, then positioned column shifter at about three o'clock, adjusted the lower column to shift rods connection to allow this and all was good. ( 1st and rev. is the rear most shifter arm at tranny) There is also a cover on the lower part of the column that can be removed to see if that spacing between column shift arms to linkage is right. to loose and it will bind.

only had a few minutes to tinker tonite,i undid the shift rods at the transmission,i think they can only go on one way or they bind with each other.I know the box on the column you speak of,imay have to open it up.No matter what I do it doesn't seem to engage the shifter linkages.It moves in and out nut not seeming to reengage as I can grab the shifter arms and they just flop around,Not sure where neutral even is,i think its like the pic.I have a spare tranny and that arm postion seems to be neutral.Could use a few pics,like where the spring attaches to.That could be the mystery spring I have left over.To top it all of I grab ahold of the shift ball and gave the shifter a good pull back and in the process broke the Lucite shift knob,dammit!!!
This spring you speak of is from where? I don't recall any spring from column to tranny on any linkage but will take a few pics to try and help you out with what I think is the correct setup.....but remember I haven't driven my car yet so??????
Thanks for the pics,it helped a lot,i even found those little springs in my box of mystery parts so now I know where they go.I think I found the problem,when I removed the cover on the steering shaft I found the tab that goes into the forks completely disengaged and lying off to the side.Popped it back into position so tomorrow i'll hook up the linkages and give it a try.
