Does anyone have tips on using Dye


After trying to nurse my arm rests back to health I decided to order replacements.

They are very brittle and turning to dust.

The problem is that I can only find the new 18 inch armrests in black so that's what I bought.

12 inch are available in all colours.

I am not the best with paint but I ordered the correct 1969 parchment dye.

My guess is that I will need a coat or two of primer of some kind before I try to match the door panel.

Does anyone have any experience with replacement armrests and dyes ?

The original armrest bases in the 454 Laurentian were turning to dust, so I had some good light green ones painted gold at a local shop. They did a real nice job. I'm not sure what success you'll have painting over the deteriorating plastic.

I called snd talked to TinMan in June. I asked for a set of green, He never got back to me.

The old ones are not paintable that's why I ordered new.

It makes good sense to trust a professional  biggrin

Oops, didn't read the part where you said you bought the black ones.     Very few people would notice the ones I put in the 454 Laurentian have the stainless insert running along the length of the armrest base.   I think they were originally from an Oldsmobile or a Buick.

We are typically our own worst critics. The little things on our cars that we know are not perfect or done wrong are seldom noticed by others.

My armrests came from Classic with the can of dye.

I took them to a top notch 60s restoration shop in London.

They sent me to the paint supplier for advice as that is who they rely on.

I was told that no primer would be needed.

I followed all the directions I was given.

I think the O.E.R can from Classic was old.

I shook it for 4 minutes !

The nozzle kept clogging and I had to rob other spray cans during painting.

Guess what ?

The armrests came out silver when the paint dried.

Too much pearl and not enough parchment

Off to Canadian Tire !

I found a parchment pearl that was too light so I got a darker base to put down first.

I painted the armrests with the base paint and then over sprayed the lighter colour in very light coats until it looked close enough to the armrest pad.

I also decided to try an experiment.

Unlike the 68s, the 69s show very little of the chrome backing plate.

The backing plates cost more then the armrests.

Bought the chrome paint like the stuff our fathers use to use on bumpers.

Let dry and reassemble.

Note, The armrest was crooked from the factory, I didn't worry about straightening

 That's what I did on my whole interior, no flaking/peeling etc. Dye seems to bite like etching primer.

Impressive.

Years ago I tried some on some vinyl fabric and it seemed to scratch off very easily.

Just a little update,

I received two emails from Classic Industries Friday, wanting reviews on each product I bought.

The armrests of course, got 5 stars.
Beautiful Product!

As for the paint, I told it like it was. Just as you can read above.
0 stars.

Just now, Classic calls me.

The are giving me a full refund for the dye.

Amazing customer service and customer appreciation.

I wish I bought all my stuff off of Dave(NOS) before he retired.

At lease there is someone else out there who cares
