66 Block Codes

Interesting, I'd never thought before to check the block code on the 283 in my 66. I guess they have no block code. All I have is an engine number so if I want to confirm that the 283 is original to my car, I have to get the GM documents.

I just wiped the pad on the front of the block and all that's there is a long number, no letters. I just assumed it would be a date code, prefix/suffix like the US cars. I'm sure my 66 Grande Parisenne 396 4 speed car had a block code like a US Impala.

Anyone else with a 66, original V8 that could check for a code?

The dealership that sold my car in '64 typed my engine # (1 digit incorrect) several places on my purchase documents:

The engine number for my 66 Impala 283 from many years ago was : 776465439. This was a 283 w/ pg.

My 66 Impala 283 was a January/66 car. Pretty sure the "17" at the start of your engine number designated a 283 with a manual trans.

The black 66 Parisienne engine number (283 with PG) starts with 7764..... according to the paperwork. So 7 is for auto trans and 1 for manual? The pic of my cowl tag is unclear but I think date code says 1-2-11.

The original engine in my 65 CS is 805517804 it's a 283/pg/2bbl car was manufactured in early May so engine would be before that.

The original engine in my 64 SD was 834490775 it's a 283/pg/4bbl car manufactured mid April so engine would be before that.

The 283 that now sits in the SD has an October 65 cast date and is number 776405456. No idea of its origin. Why I hi-lighted some of the numbers is because they are more pronounced stampings than the other numbers.

If car is from Winnipeg area   it probably was a 396 stick

a lot of Big blocks were swapped out by "locals"

Hi Carl

My 66 has the original engine so I will check the code on it. When I got the docs from GM the number match on the block.

That would be great.

I wish I could find out that my car doesn't have a matching numbers block so some of the guys would get off my case when I talk about swapping in the 427...

Hi Carl

The number on mine is 776491520. This is what was on the GM docs.

If it is not numbers matching then by all means go for the 427.

I wonder if I read mine wrong or if it's a bad stamp. I bet my number starts with 77, not 17. Is your car built late in the model year? Your number is 6491520 mine is 6431768.

Even a 427 in a matching number 283 car "doubles" its value and doubles its curb appeal wink

I double checked my code and it's clearly 17 that it starts with. As stated, that must mean manual trans. Does anyone here have or know of a manual trans 66 Pontiac 283 that they could check the block code?

 Hi Carl

I was starting to think that  something was  really wrong since your car was built two months after mine. Yours being May and mine March but I see that your posted earlier that your number is 1765xxx not 1764xxx.

Wish I knew someone with a 66 3 or 4 speed car. Hope that someone can determine if the standards where stamped with the 17.

Luppy

Oops, I'll have to double check that later. I may have typed it wrong.
