65-70 B Body Engine Mounts

I am largely to blame for a bad thread derail in the thread about the nice 59 Parisienne hardtop just purchased by a member. We got into a discussion about engine mounts so rather than more derail it would be better to continue it here.

At any rate, my personal experience seems to not be the same as what others have found. All I've ever encountered is that for 65-69 there are two styles of frame mounts and two styles of engine mounts, regardless of engine size being 283 307 327 350 396 or 427. As long as the engine mount was matched to the correct frame mount, it worked fine.

What has anyone else experienced?

Well I don't have the experience you have with undoing factory big block mounts Carl wink, all my small blocks have been the same. Now this is limited to 3 different 65's, the only issues I have encountered have been with aftermarket interlock engine mounts, some needing a little file work for the bolt to slide through.

I always thought the issue with mounts was more a Chevelle/Camaro/Nova thing, don't really recall any of the B body guys discussing this at the Impala meets, if they did I didn't pay attention........

Carl , I have a buddy who experienced the differenced an issue  when dropping in a 427 into his SBC 69 Impala project .  We thought the frame mounts were  too tall , as the  drivers side valve cover would not clear the P/B booster . Back then , we noticed  the difference ( we compared to another BBC car in the yard which had lower frame mounts ) so we assumed they had to be different for a 427 built car . Lots of discussions over the years until we found out that indeed there were two versions of frame mounts  , but only due to the motor mounts being used ..... nothing to do with the size of the engine .

Exactly. And it seems plant code, time of manufacture, Chev vs Pontiac, Canada vs US, none of that fits any pattern.

In 69 the 307 used the old engine mounts that used a higher frame mount but the 350 and larger engines used the new interlocking mount and required a shorter frame mount. There was also a mount width difference also between the interlocking and older style mount.

When putting the 454 into my 70 Parisienne (which sits on a 69 chassis), we didn't have a problem getting the engine in, but we had a problem getting the drivers side exhaust manifold on with the engine in the car. No matter what we did there just wasn't room as the steering box is in the way. I ended up lifting the drivers side of the engine up about 1" (after removing the long motor mount to perch bolt), put on the manifold, then dropped the engine down again. I however don't remember having that problem when I put the 454 into my 70 2+2.

For the 70 Parisienne (on the 69 frame), I don't think I used the stock perches (it was a 350 car). I think I used a pair of perches that I had on the shelf that had already been blasted & painted. They looked identical though.

Looking at the parts book makes me think that it sort of leveled out for 1970 and things became more standard.

I'm going to search some more parts books to see if I can make any sense out of it all.
