Canadian Rally Wheel Centercap

I popped the center medallion off one of my original rally caps, only to find that it has the SAME casting and part numbers as a 1967 Chevrolet cap, but it's clearly different.  My only guess at this point is that 3901715 is not the Chevy disc medallion OR the Canadian Pontiac medallion but is actually the base onto which the medallion is riveted, so you can only see the back of the base once assembled?  No real idea.

3901712 is the center cap itself (without the ornament).

My GUESS (and please verify this if you have a book) is that 3401978 is the actual Canadian ornament.   But what I don't get is why it's listed for other applications with wheel covers AND for "1969 ALL WITH RALLY WHEELS".  Is the little center cap on the rally wheel ornament actually interchangeable with the center cap on a hubcap?

This ornament (3401978) was also used on the wire wheel covers for some CDN Pontiac models.

Thank goodness I have four of them. Ironically on my clone 2+2 I have Chinese fakes of the plain Chevy cap that lack the wording, so they actually look pretty close!

Dave, the date of your parts book will make a difference as to the wording and applications. A 1970 parts book will list more part numbers than a later one, because as stock of rarer pieces dried up, they would start to substitute parts that would fit those applications.
I knew a woman in North Vancouver who had an original black 1970 W-30 convertible. She decided to restore it, and wanted to replace every part she could, including the engine and drivetrain. She ordered a W-30 short block and heads in about 1978, not understanding that GM just substituted a 455 short block and less desirable heads because the good stuff was long gone. I was in GM parts in the early 70's, and one of my jobs was replacing parts books, or sections of them on a regular basis when GM shipped them to us. Lots of superceded and changed up part numbers.
