1969 four speed blockoff plate (pic)

I had to fake one of these for my coupe not knowing they were just black, so we made a nice one out of that same brushed aluminum on the dash, put PONTIAC script on it... it's 10X nicer than the real thing, which is below!

I'd never seen one until this car, and it's just a black (or dark blue, but I think its black) plate.

After I converted my 70 Parisienne to a 4 speed, and we were bleeding the brakes, my buddy working the brake pedal commented on the gear indicator was still visible in the dash. I had a spare display, and painted the clear lens black, and installed it.  I later sourced the proper block off plate, it's just like yours, and if I get real ambitious this summer I'll install it.

I've commented before that I've seen a few tilt / console cars that had the block off plate. Not sure why they'd need one.

A strip of black electrical tape did it for me...

seventy2plus2, what's your name? I haven't caught it yet, and it's weird to call you seventy2plus2!

I think there was something about tilt columns in 1970 where they didn't get a gear indicator or something, but it's very hazy. Hope someone can recall the details.

No clock on my car. Per North, being a later car, it's got the later blockoff. This car was ordered with only performance options... and since they're not standard even on a 2+2, no clock!

My name's Clint. I've heard a number of variations of it. Haha.

You indicate you've got a later clock delete plate. What's the difference between it and the early one? I've got a handful of 69 & 70 clock delete plates.

Hi Clint!

According to North, the later ones like mine are just an outline of the arrowhead logo. The earlier ones, like the one that came in my Laurentian, are a filled in arrowhead.  You can see mine in the pic above, and it's the "late" version.

I'll have to take a look at the 69 & 70 ones I have. Maybe there are 2 versions for 70 as well.

I assume any floor shift 69 or 70 has this?

I'm trying to remember if my favourite wrecking yard has any floor shift cars. He has a number of 69-70's.

The standard shift cars would have the dash shift indicator block off plate, but both my floor shift automatic 2+2's have the dash shift indicators in addition to the console indicator.  As indicated above, I've seen a couple 70 2+2's with tilt wheels that have the block off plates.

I imagine all of the 70 is going to be the outline style but on black, rather than dark blue.

I wish I could have been in THAT meeting when they were planning the 1970 Pontiac:

"OK, are you ready for this? You thought you'd seen it all with a dark blue dash, but for 1970, we're going all the way to BLACK. That's right, a black dash! We have the technology!"

No idea why they make little weird changes like that!

I checked, all the 70 clock block off plates I have are the same.  I also looked at the 69 ones I have, and I have one each of the early & late styles.    70 is similar to the late 69, but as per GM it's a bit different (less 3D), and obviously in black.

Mine is a tilt wheel TH400 car and has the shift indicator block off plate. I think in past discussions it was determined that the tilt wheel console cars, whether a 4 speed or automatic, only had them.

So they had blockoff plates even in 1969, not just 1970, if you had tilt?

I wonder why that is. The column rotation must still work in order to facilitate the neutral safety, column lock, and reverse lights.

What if you had tilt but no console? Then how would you know what gear you're in? And if it's only console cars, I wonder why?
