If only the Cosworth was available as a 73, much better styling.

I was 16 when these cars came out

At that time Motor trend and Car and Driver were my favourite car magazines and they were raving about these cars

Major issue may have been the price which was close to new corvette

Now wasn't it just the Cosworth head on the GM block? If so, was it still an oil burner?

The block was a better version. Oil burning had been solved by '76 and they came with a 5 year 80000 km warranty. The '76 was a much better car that was tarnished by the reputation of the early models. The Cosworth was a smaller displacement engine than the regular Vega, 122 vs. 140 cubes, but had a nice twin cam setup & fuel injection. I don't believe they were ever actually marketed in Canada.

In town a guy bought a new '74 Vega coupe. He didn't wait for the engine to fail, he swapped in a stout 327 & Muncie. Within 2 years that car was stolen & never recovered. There was also a '72 hatchback with a warmed 400 small block in town, plus a drag Vega Panel in the next town. This was a long time ago.

A good swap would have been an aluminum Olds or Buick 215 V8.

When I bought my 75 Monza V8 I went to get an FSM for it. The parts guy handed me  Vega FSM and I said no I have a Monza, he said that's what you think, its a Vega and this is the right book.

GM marketed these cars with the slogan "get one Vega for the price of 2".
Pricing

Due mostly to inflation[citation needed], but also because of emissions and safety mandates, prices of all automobiles rose 50 percent during the Vega's seven-year lifespan. The same basic Vega that cost $2090 in 1971 carried a retail price of $3249 by the end of 1977. And since all other cars suffered the same inflationary rise, less expensive cars were in greater demand than those with higher prices which helped Vegas sell. The 1975 Cosworth Vega at $5,918 was priced $892 below the Chevrolet Corvette. "Cosworth. One Vega for the price of two" as it was advertised, was priced out of the market, and fell well short of its projected sales goal.[45]
