The only thing worse than having one of these diesels is having one that does not work as well.

One day an actual running Olds 350 diesel in the original host vehicle will be an extremely rare curiosity. I remember seeing an '83 Grand Prix in Thibodeau, Louisiana back in 1991. It said "5.7 Diesel" on the trunk lid. I don't know how few they made, but they only made 138 Monte Carlos with that engine. Good intentions coupled with a rushed introduction and hindered by cost accountants. Remember glow plugs? If not, a diesel isn't for you because you don't understand.

Our neighboring farm family had a Oldsmobile diesel car. It was definitely a fascination that this big four door Olds had a 5.7 diesel. It wasn't long that the issues for these engines popped up and essentially proved that this was a bad design. The successive 6.2 was slightly better but nothing to get too excited about.

I went on a custom harvest crew in the States in 1982 and my rig to drive was a brand new Chevy 1500 6.2 4x4 with a manual transmission pulling a 30' fifth wheel trailer from job to job. The owner was so proud of his new truck and he told everyone that would listen that it cost $20K. This unit could not keep up with the rest of the convoy and would be constantly lagging behind, particularly when you got into rolling hills. It was so sucked out. I can't remember exactly but I thought the transmission was lacking one gear as the top gear was just too high of a jump from the next lower gear. The owner would be so po'd that I could not keep up. I remember there was a GMC dually with a 454 and manual trans in the convoy and that unit had no problem keeping up.

i had two 95swith the 6.5 it wasn't much better. the big gas pots 500, 454, 400  have a lot of grunt when built up, consumption is a issue but its not terrible I can live with 14, I can run harder with a load than most stock diesels.

I suspect those old 6.2's didn't have a turbo? We have an old 98 Ford F-350 with a non-turbo 7.2 diesel that we use at work for hauling bee equipment. While it's a bulletproof motor it's gutless and a pig on fuel.

that doesn't work either, I had a intersmashble with a non turbo 7.3 , it was a 2ton, good on fuel pulled well and no electronics was a bonus. used to carry three concrete tanks on the deck, truck is still on the road. we have a 7.3 turbo in a ford essentially the same engine and it has gremlins all the time, halls about the same load. all modern engines a low compression to meet emissions . don't get me started on all the non functioning pollution crap stuck on modern motors, a properly tuned gas or diesel should run clean, observed buy fuel economy.

Detroit Diesel 2-strokes were cheap, powerful, simple, and legislated out of existence. The old Cummins were super reliable, but emissions requirements legislated them out of existence too.

Designs that were successful for decades were made illegal. Funny, but I breathed 1960s air and I am still alive. Go figure...

I wonder if anyone has sat down what the cost is the the environment when all these new motors start to run like crap because sensors that work fine in a lab start to fail, and not even a technician can figure them out, not to speak of the financial cost to the owners, or is it a conspiracy. haven't had to touch the jimmy in 20000miles, except maintenance, just saying and it actually works hard.

About 15 years ago here in Calgary, I looked at a GMC Diablo with the diesel  was unsure if it was a safe buy so passed, often think about though.
