I'm pretty sure that was the only offering by then. I think there was a 350 up to 81, or maybe only 80 but that 307 was such a great engine I would have bought it way sooner than a 350. Those things got killer gas mileage.

I'm assuming you say that because only the 307 was available but is there a way to tell a 307 from a 350 just with a picture such as this one?

When my Dad retired from selling new cars, he sold used cars in PEI. I used to buy cars for him in Halifax, the cars were almost all Olds rear wheel drives, bought 10-15 80-85 98's. 30 MPG highway with a "normal" right foot. This is a real nice one. I thought some of the later ones had 305's?

There is the oil filler on the intake in Olds engines. Thats why I said its a 307. Thought 350s were available as well

I think the 350 Olds looks identical though. I'm wondering if there is some visual difference.

I didn't know you could get a 350 Olds in 83. I thought 307's and Chevy 305's were the only engines in these cars.

Todd is right but let's all not rule out that this otherwise untouched car could have had an engine swap with a three year old Olds 350, 1980 being the last year of production for a 350 Olds V8 engine.

PS: I would have answered sooner but I've been out of town and away from computer.

Ok, next question, is there a way to tell a 307 from a 350?

As far as I know, 350's are either Gold or Blue, 307's are Black.

Hmm, ok, so colour is the only way. I was wondering. I suspected they likely look mechanically identical but wasn't sure.

I had an 85 Delta 88 2dr with the 307 and as said 30 mpg . Just touch the gas and this thing was gone. What years had the 403? This car replaced my 80 Pontiac 2dr. With a very sad 267 :(

Yes, I think they measured 0-60 times for those in days.

Good engine though except for the issue with wearing out cam lobes.

I remember putting seals in the rearend of an Olds 98. Not sure of the year, but between the years of 77 to 80. No overdrive and the axle ratio was 2:14 to one. I had never seen a gear like that before. Car had a 403 engine I it. No wonder the good gas mileage on the highway.

They never had much Horsepower or torque, very middle of the road for the era. The LV2 307 4 bbl., VIN code "Y", was used from 1980-1990. It was used by every GM automobile marque. It had 140 HP and 250 lb-ft torque.  Buick used it in Lesabre, Riviera, Regal, Chevy in the Caprice, Pontiac in the Parisienne, Cadillac in the Brougham and Olds used it in the Delta 88, 98, Custom Cruiser, Cutlass and Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass Supreme Classic and Toronado. The LG8, VIN code 9 was a HO version that had 180 HP  and 245 lb-ft torque used in 442, Hurst Olds and optional Cadillac Brougham.

The 403 was a three year deal only, 1977-79. It was used in most of the same cars above except Cadillac and Chevy never used it and it found its way into the 98, Bonneville and Electra plus the wagon versions of these divisions. For Pontiac people the 403 was used in the Bonneville, Safari, Grand Prix & Can Am (CA only) and much scoffed at in the Formula and Trans Am. Oh yes the GMC Motorhome used the 403 too.

One area of potential weakness in these cars is related to the fact that they used the GM TH200 Metric Transmission

For cars like these it may not have been much of a factor due to the fact that the typical owner were seniors who were not liable to do many hard throttle starts

Anyway one of my friends has the four door version of one of these cars and it won't go into reverse or shift out second - it is presently sitting in a storage area until he figures out what what to do with it. He really likes the car and doesn't want to scrap it

Transmissions shops can't rebuild it? Auto recyclers don't have any exchange transmissions?
