Those first gen Grand ams are very cool cars....

I had a loaded 75......for about 25 years.......(solid car with a nice interior)........

It took FOREVER...to sell.......and I didn't get anywhere CLOSE to 25 k for it...

Most people don't know....or understand what they are...

Was planned to be the GTO then a last minute marketing shift from Euro influence of BMW atc... created the Grand Am and the GTO was made an option on the LeMans.

This is my old car that I bought in 1978 and sold in 1991 at Barrie flea market. Came up for sale last fall by the person I sold it to. Looks like it was sold and is going to be flipped. In 91 it was at the POCI show in Cleveland and won first in intermediate class. Later that summer went on vacation to Myrle Beach SC then took it to Barrie where it sold. It's good to see it so many years later in this condition. Barry

And GTO only sold 4806 including 231 made in Oshawa.

Must be gratifying to see an old car of yours Big Bear after all these years.

Just got off the phone with a guy who has an original 73 4 speed, maroon. He knows this black car too. Says his is one of 187 4 speeds with 20 being 4 doors.

I remember seeing a 4 door Grand Am 4 speed car for sale in the Old Car trader about 30 years ago. I wonder if it's still around?

I was interested in that 4 door '73 (automatic) that showed up in the local ads this summer, but it was gone before I could contact the seller.  You have to be fast in this hobby!

Always have had a soft spot for them, this one looks like a beauty (but way above my price range).  It's cool that it is a member's former car.  Love the stories that each car holds.

The interior in those early Grand ams...was second 2 none......for a luxo-cruiser....and BEST plastic dash of the 70's....next to the Trans am.

I took mine on a road trip in 95.......from Vancouver.....down the coast (Hwy 101)....into San Fran.......Had lunch at the Pontiac Grill...in Santa Cruz.....down to Monterey........Hurst Castle.....and then over to Reno....for Hot August nights........

Cruise control...climate control AC......and a great sounding Delco cassette deck......with a big box of tapes...

The dash and interior was lifted directly from the Grand Prix, the Grand Prix was the same car as the LeMans line with a little stretch in the wheelbase, GM often referred to them as Special A body. When looking for parts for a LeMans/Grand Am always include a Grand Prix in the search. I've got springs fom a Grand Prix, front air dam from a Grand Am, dome light from a Grand Am etc...Gotta love GM mass production.

The trick with these cars is to get them as nice and complete as you can, because they really aren't supported by the restoration parts industry. That one is beautiful and probably drives & handles very nicely. All it needs are some tires to replace those old Eagle STs & some exhaust tips like Ray (73SC) has on his '73.

4-speed shift kit sounds like the trans was upgraded from the 3-speed, plus it says "Holley 4 Barrel Carbs" (more than 1 carb?)

There is a red '73 Grand Am coupe with a 400 on my street that is in a garage under 4' of junk. I would love to sneak a picture of it sometime when his garage door is open but that is kind of a violation of privacy.

I've heard the 197 figure regarding 4-speed manual '73 Grand Ams, but 20 4-doors contained within that group is a surprise (I seem to remember an estimate of 6 or 7 back in the 1980s). The manuals were only on the 400 4-barrel versions.

The production data being so uncertain is a US problem, if Grand Ams had been built in Oshawa we'd know exactly the split.

The correct exhaust extensions are next to impossible to find and rarely do you ever see '73 with proper factory extensions. GM used the part on only two 1973 car lines; Pontiac LeMans/GTO/Grand Am & Hurst Olds.  I've seen NOS extensions once on ebay. I got mine from Bill Markowski '73 GTO and GT owner near Buffalo and long time GTOAA executive and member.

I am not one to gripe over peoples pricing but is he on par with asking amount? I have no clue. I have never seen one. Floor/motor/truck pics would help.

Hagerty only lists a 400 CI Grand Am so I guess you could maybe add 10% to these values (In US $)

Current Values

  • #1 Concours$18,400
  • #2 Excellent$12,400
  • #3 Good$7,700
  • $3,900
    #4 Fair

That 73 is over-priced...by at least 10 g's....as nice as it appears to be......Needs a stick.......for anything more than 15k

But if you take that 25K.....and go shopping in the 68-72 GTO store......it becomes attractive.......and a FAR cooler car...JMO

Mint 73 GTO's can rarely crack $20,000 and Can Am's are similar.

It costs three times that to restore one of these style Pontiacs, especially the one year body of the 73. As Cam says buy the best you can if you have to have one. For me I paid $2800 in 2004 for my driver and over the years have put very little into it while keeping it running and looking as good as it will. It's got a number of warts but I see no sense in putting a lot of money into a car that will remain undesirable and low valued. As I often say, its not worth much but its faster than spit on a griddle,

Two photos follow where the factory correct exhaust extensions can be seen.

They have a bend in them that tucks up under the quarter panel and the proper tail pipe only runs to mid quarter panel.

The extension is about two feet long and it exits on an angle to the outside of the bumper. There are actually indents in the rear bumper designating where they exit.
