Interesting 71 Firebird 400 ad on Winnipeg kijiji

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/winnipeg/1970-firebird-formula-400-past-owners/1391325805?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

would the 3 speed intalled in this car still be the Dearborn ( Ford) heavy duty three speed?

There's about 25 bolts involved in the conversion....

You can bolt a 70-73 front bumper and facia....onto a 74- 81......

77-81 conversions....will require the earlier hood...

They are commonly referred to as "Frankenbirds"....aww

Weird thing is the car is not for sale. The person is looking for previous owners.

 Prolly drug induced....

It's fairly common....to put a 70-73 front bumper and hood....on a 76-81 T/A............

The 70-73's are now getting out of reach in price......if you can even find one for sale........

But front bumper facelift for $3500......is a cheap pacifier......From the front.....you can't really tell...

Here is a FINE example......and Canadian,eh?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB3mdVmnous

Furry dice......Yuk.

I actually sold the owner of this 76 Firebird most of the parts for his conversion...about 10 years ago....

Ray - Not sure what you mean by the car becoming a '74 in photo 4. Photo 4 is a shot of the rear - looks like a '70 to me. What am I missing?

 The original ad has been edited to remove the photo of the 1974 Red Formula. This whole ad is fishy to me anyway.

He is looking for his old car and likely did a Google search looking for similar cars and goofed when he posted the 74. Someone likely called him out on it and he removed it.

You guys are funny.

That was posted by me.

What's fishy(?) - did the skeptics ever read the ad?

That is my car.

If you would have read the ad, before the edit, it would have said that that picture of the 1974 Formula 455 was the car I went to (Riverton MB) look at - and the skinny guy in the photo owned that car, and mine at the time;
The ad for (what ended up as my car) was passed over because it was priced low, and said something along the lines of "will trade for ATV"... I figured it was a turd.
I am grateful he mentioned it when we were there, because it was (automotive) love at first sight.

Here is the picture of the 1974 Formula 455 that I removed from my ad:
IMG_9403b.jpg

I actually revised the ad, because I got in contact with both the guy who sold me the car (from that picture), as well as a good friend of two of the prior owners of my car - I now potentially can get all the history of my car back to the mid or early 1980's (I haven't yet spoken with either of the two prior owners, but hope to at some point).

Back to the transmission;
Pontiac DID use a Dearborn 3 speed as the heavy duty three speed for 1968 & 1969 (and maybe for a year or so before, but I cannot say with any certainty);
Chevrolet started phasing in their "MC1" Muncie three speeds in late 1968, as they had divisional exclusivity to this transmission for the 1969 model year;
This same Muncie design three speed was used as the 'Heavy Duty' three speed (floor shift only; standard on Formula, optional on Esprit) for Firebirds in 1970 & 1971 - then for 1972 the heavy duty three speed option was dropped for the Firebird.
The Muncie three speed was used on all divisions A-body platforms as the heavy duty three speed from 1970-1974 (as an example, it was the base transmission on the GTO for 1970 through 1973);

Curiously, although Chevrolet used this transmission as standard fare behind all SS-396 engines, and offered it in the Camaro behind the 350/4bbl, the only Chevrolet cars which could get it after 1969 were non-SS big block cars.
The Muncie three speed was often found behind big block powered trucks from 1969 through to I believe 1974.

The Muncie three speed had two gear sets:
A (truck) = 3.03/1.75/1.00
B (car) = 2.42/1.57/1.00

The only difference between the two gear sets is the main cluster gear, and the input shaft;

I found a 100% correct Muncie 330 for my car out of Spokane Washington nearly a decade ago;
About a year later, I bought a spare ("A" gear set) Muncie 330 from a rural Washington state dismantler - just before it was sent away for scrap! - I literally had to dig ouf of a pile of transmissions;
I have sourced a spare "B" set cluster gear, but have been unable to find a spare input shaft;
I have also found a rebuilder who has service items, and will probably be placing an order with his shortly.

If you look at this picture of the transmission, you can see the input shaft is marked with a single ring:
IMG_4440s.jpg

The Muncie three speed is often mistaken for a Saginaw three speed - the easiest way to distinguish the two is the saginaw has a single/centered "nipple" bolt boss ontop of the shift cover, while the Muncie has two "nipple" bosses on either end of the shift cover.

If anyone has a lead on spare Muncie "330" 3 speed parts (or by some fluke, knows my car from when it was in or around Winnipeg) - please contact me!
