4L80E build post.


Another project for our long winter. I bought this core about two years ago, to possibly add an overdrive to the 67. I love the BB, but with the 3.55 gear, she's not a happy highway cruiser. Turns 2700 at 60. I'd like to go further afield at some point, maybe check out some different shows. A overdrive is a must if the car is ever to be driven as intended. 

I did the research, and had flipped back and fourth between a Gear vendors overdrive, and the 80. Both have similar final drive ratio's, the GV is .78, the 80 has a taller .75 which will give me an estimated 650 RPM drop at 60. The 80 will involve more work and cost to make it work, but with the added bonus of being able to control all of it's function in car. Also the fact the 80 will have a lockup converter will help keep things cooler. The 400 with the GV and a 2800 stall converter would have been in a constant slipping condition at cruise RPM creating excess heat. Bottom line is the 80 is a more elegant solution, and I really look forward to the challenge. I at least have had very good luck with my 400 build to date.

The unit is a 1998 model from a 4x4 3/4 ton Chevrolet pickup. The 98 model is, I think, the last year for the traditional non LS Bellhousing pattern, and it 's a good unit, as it has the improved center support oiling system. It'll need a different output shaft, as it has a bolt on yoke, not a slip. I'll make most of all the standard improvement to it as I move along.

 

So I opened it up to determine if it's a viable donor core for the 67.

Pleasantly surprised, filthy outside, it was exceptionally clean inside with really nothing in the pan or magnet. I know it doesn't tell the whole story, but it's a good start. The guy who I bought it off of said it was working when the truck was taken off the road.

Looks like he might have been telling the truth. We'll see as we get further in. And I'm open to any and all suggestions on this build, please feel free to comment.

They go anywhere from 550 to 1800...US Carl. I'm thinking I'll be in for at least a grand on that piece.

There are also some simple manual options as well. 

Along with the controller, I'll need a good stall lockup converter, an electric speedometer drive motor, a throttle position sensor to fit my Holley and a new driveshaft. It's not a cheap proposition, but I can spread it it over the next 8 months.

Looking forward to the build and the tutorial Mark. I enjoy the way you approach and do your projects. Might cost more than what some are willing to pay but you have something unique after for a car like yours plus like most hobbies they don't come free. A few rounds of golf and there isn't anything to show there but you will have something.

Thats Cool Randy, 

Could always go full manual with momentary switches tripping relays, controlled by paddles on the steering wheel lol! I think there can be a lot of mcgiver stuff done if you want with this one.

Apparently it only requires two spots in the tunnel be massaged. 90 degree cooler line banjo fittings take care of the line clearance issue.

Right now I'm more concerned as to how I'm going to manage the 3 speed column shifter with a 4 speed. Might have to modify the indicator? I have an adjustable Lokar shift linkage.




 Convert the linkage to cable shift. Works a treat.

Disassembled the 80 today. Very familiar, similar to a 400. Just another planetary and a massive valve body and pump. It all came apart very easily. The pump came out with little effort at all. Some guys seem to struggle with it. I won't go into detail about this part of the build, except to say anyone can do this! If you're bored and have a old core, set it up and break it down for the hell of it. It's actually fun.

The transmission looks to be in good shape. The steels are a little heat checked as expected. I bet all the piston seals are still intact. I notice some minor rubbing wear on the intermediate clutch (center support) spring retainer plate. Looks like maybe the direct clutch has kissed it. All in all, it's pretty decent! It's really clean. I suspect it's never been apart.

And the #1 disassembly tools by a mile...a cheap little Chinese Stanley 90° pick along with an old slotted screwdriver. That it! But I must admit I'm cheating these days, I use a small cordless impact driver now to remove bolts. Way easier!

Notice the picture under the lamp. And there's something orange lurking under the bench....
