67 SD Paint Questions

I am doing a body on color change to the original of Provincial White.I found a 396 325hp engine out of a 67 Chevelle SS this summer and want to take the car back to how it was born on March 6th 1967.Car is at the body shop now and they will be starting on it soon.Questions i have are the following:

     1. What color should be painted under the hood of a BB car??   white?  ive heard flat black?

     2. Proper color of hood hinges??

     3. The gills on each side are painted body color...are they a "peel and stick" adhesive on the tips??

     4.Body color on the firewall!

     5. When you open the trunk all you should see is white, white and more white??

     6. Anyone have a drivers side eye brow moulding they would part with?? Right side is good but left is poor!

     7. Any recommendations for a good chrome polish??

Really looking forward to getting this car finished and on the road for spring.Mixed emotions about painting it as i really liked the color combo and the paint was still very presentable being a 33 yr old paint job but thinking it will be very nice to get it back to original color and 396!Thanks in advance!!

There is a pair of 67 eye brows on Kijiji, yes body color on firewall and inside of trunk, I think under hood is body color.

Under the hood is semi gloss black similar to the wheel wells... with a bit of body colour overspray around the edge underneath. Hinges were likely grey phosphate coated, I've used vht cast iron as an alternate on a few cars it's a decent look. Side fins are chrome, painted body colour with the raised edge left unpainted.

Thanks for those replies!!I had heard flat black under hood but nice to know semi gloss was correct.Just nice to get those little things right when your trying to get back to a original look.Going to go with a black SD stripe package as well to bust up the white...had my painter say he would try a flat black color on the stripe vs a gloss black but pretty sure original stripe cars were gloss black as they were only offered in white and black stripes i believe.

The stripes were a decal, likely in a finish similar to semi gloss. All of the decal specs are available.

Yes on the decal part Andrew....thanks.I made it sound like my painter would be painting the decal but I have them traced off my old decal that was on the car for the new ones. What about getting the fins rechromed?? Seems like a waste getting all 6 fins chromed and then painted over when all you need is the raised edge showing chrome...anyone ever use that Mylar product on the raised edges?? I'm sure the chromed edge is a nicer look. Anybody have a nice drivers side eye brow molding they'd part with?? Rather get a nice original if I could...could always get the set from Dale's Muscle Car then I'd have a right side for sale!

I hope you took pics of the original oil change decal on the inner fender. Being a Beaumont you must have the GM Oshawa Oil Change decal. It is on the side the dipstick is on, supposed to be read while facing the engine, and seemingly slapped haphazardly. All I have left is the glue residue but the replacement is on hand. I got it from a shop in B.C. but I will have to dig to find the name.

So are you having the rear quarter emblems removed and putting the stripes on or leaving the emblems on and running with a stripe as well? Stripe cars had the rear quarter emblem deleted.

The original oil change decal is long gone.I had spoke to Dale's Muscle Car and I'm getting a decal package from them that would have all the original decals a 67 SD came with right from the Beaumont 396 air cleaner decal clean through to the trunk decal so will be interesting to get that package.I ordered it a while ago and should check with them as I was in no hurry. I've decided to turn it into a stripe car and just forget the Sport Deluxe emblems as the 117 original stripe cars were without the rear quarter emblems from factory.Decision was made a little easier when my Deluxe emblems both broke when removed.I really like the look of the SD stripe on these cars...think a black stripe will bust up the white and look good.Factory was a glossy black stripe...what do you think a mat black stripe would look like?? I'm also thinking of going away from the original look of the grill and painting it black to match which color of stripe I choose...either the gloss or the mat black. When i bought my car in 2001 the grill was painted black and i like the contrast on the car.

I think the stripes will help break up the white nicely. I wouldn't black out the grille, I think it looks too stark. There's a few restos that blacked them out. A black vinyl top would look sharp.

Agreed. Does your car have factory red interior? Think of it, Provincial White with black SD stripes, correct satin black on the SD rear trim, black vinyl roof & red interior, finished off with red-lines. It would really pop!

If anything, if you desire a darker grille then check out shades of charcoal grey. Go easy because it will look darker when it goes on the car, especially against the white. GM stylists knew what they were doing back then. Usually. SD's are unique enough that you shouldn't need to embellish them. Besides, blacked-out grilles are so "Chevy". wink

if you have a red interior-what about red stripes? I have seen it on a few buicks and chevelles and it looks great

A shameless plug for the 67 Beaumont assembly manual that I sell, it has the decal installation location/dimensions for the fenders, doors and quarter panels. As far as I've seen, there is no other place to find those details.

LEVANT grain (the pebbly finish) is correct for most vinyl tops 1963- 72-or so. I see a lot of cars with the newer  vinyl materials which is not correct.

Thanks for the reply on the Levant grain vinyl being correct Dale.Wondering if you ordered a vinyl roof package what would you do for the chrome strip that would separate the paint from the vinyl roof...are they available??
