Wow, never seen a console like that. I have seen column shift cars with buckets and no console, but never this setup. You learn something new everyday!

Most interesting.

I've seen consoles like that, but never on big blocks.

When I talked about converting my 66 Strato Chief to a big block but leaving it as a 3 on the tree, I set out to see if a 427 3 on the tree combo was possible. At that time, everything I could find said no. I don't think I ever did the research on the possibility of the combo with a 396 though, but this document proves it was possible.

I also poked around for an HD 3 speed manual like the big blocks came with and there's some out there for sale if a guy wants one.

That's a pretty cool car.

And on closer inspection I notice something I think is pretty cool.

The console option on SD's and SS's and pretty much all our cars is always RPO D55. Did anyone notice this one is option D59? Wow, again I learned something new today.

Well, with that said, on further investigation maybe the D59 is console and gauges as one RPO. However, I don't think in Canada we had the gauges in anything but a Caprice whereas in the US they could order the gauges in any Impala SS. Anyone know more on this?

Wow, the gauge package makes the console very modern looking.

Did you see all the other stuff the listing gentleman has for sale, a ton of 60's Chevy parts.

Carl.........waaay back in fall of '65 I remember a 66 Grande Parisienne coming off the truck to York Mills Pontiac

with a 327 and 3 on the tree. Cannot remember the console but I'm sure it was there, the car was brand new.

I was not working there by then but had moved on to Gorries. That day I was visiting a mechanic friend at YM.

Bernie, it could have been a Strato Bench seat in that car also.

I've seen 2-3 66 Caprices in wrecking yards over the years with 3 on the tree, and I see in the order guide that a Grande Parisienne certainly could have been ordered that way but I'm still waiting to see my first one!

Local legend says the Fire Chief ordered a Red 1966 biscayne or Bel Air with a 427 and 3 speed on the column.

I never saw it but have met a few guys who claim to have seen it.

Thanks
Randy

On the Pontiacs they claim there is no such thing but I guess I never looked in to the Chevies.

It would have to be a 3 on the tree if the combo was available because it appears there was no 3 speed manual floor shift available in a 66 Chev or Pontiac body with any engine option.

Maybe it was a 396 car? Not saying it wasn't a 427, but those flags are so similar and our memories get hazy!

I just looked at a 1966 Chevy brochure and it claims 396-427 used a special 3 speed manual.

Maybe the Fire Chiefs car was real.

Thanks
Randy

Canadian Pontiac brochure says the same thing!!

Years ago I had a black 1966 Grande Parisienne 283 with 3 speed on the column and it had a long skinny ashtray where the automatic floor shifter would have been.

Thanks
Randy

Somewhere in my stash of goodies is a delete plate for a 68-69 Impala (and 1970 Cdn Pontiac) console.

Back in those days, on full-sized Chevrolets & Canadian Pontiacs, when they came with buckets it was understood that the console was part of the package. 1966 was a unique year in that only in '66 the Impala Super Sport was option code A51 in Canada, rather than a separate model as it was in the U.S.  The A51 option also turned a '66 Parisienne into a Parisienne Sport Deluxe.

I assume that in '66 you could order Full Instrumentation in the Impala SS. Maybe we have to get one of those unique Canadian price lists from Marvin Welch in order to see if the option is priced out.

I am betting that only holds true in the US.

But as always, I'm open to be proven wrong!

It's late and I never want to correct the walking encyclopedia, but surely you mean Parisienne Custom Sport, Cam. A late night posting slip.

Probably.

Think about the car in question. You wanted space, style, cheap, simple, rugged, and you wanted the gauges. Ordering the 396 gets you a tougher drive train. A required cheap upgrade to the Warner T16 (basically a cast iron T10 but a 3 speed with a column shift) gets you the same trans as offered with the 427. An 11" clutch, h.d. u-joints & 12-bolt rear, a general performance cam & a Quadrajet. Looking at the build sheet (score!) I don't see N10 so the car came with a single exhaust system with resonator & long tip. It would have balls but certainly wouldn't win any races with a balky 3-in-the-tree. Manual steering & brakes. Rhythm & cruising, not first through the lights. It would probably get better mileage than dad's '74 Biscayne 350, you'd be surprised with an L35.

That h.d 3-speed was also offered in '65 as option M13 (fully-synchronized 3-spd) with 327s (over the non-syncro-low Saginaw) on Chevrolets & our Pontiacs. Required as base on 396 (U.S) & 409.

Caprice coupes in  U.S with buckets all came standard with the gauges, even 283 Powerglide & 3-speed cars. I don't have the Canadian brochure except for the full-line regarding Impalas and it mentions & shows nothing regarding gauges. Gauges were however optional on V8 Impala Super Sports. Again, perhaps U.S. only...

Rear antenna, Marina Blue, a '66 Impala SS fastback with a super rare blank console with the gauge stack. I have seen others but meteorites are more common. So what are the odds that there are 2 '66 Super Sports with 3-in-the-tree, one a six, one a 396? It must be a busy solar year.

Whether its original or not I'm loving that console with the guage package.
Hadn't 58Poncho installed a similar console in the 66 Parisienne he had?

Yes, Randy, there it is in print for the 1966 Pontiac... 427 with 3-speed:

Thanks for posting that - I don't recall ever seeing one in the past, but it would be cool... and rare as hen's teeth.
