I was talking to a guy in Edmonton a couple years ago that had a 66 L72 Biscayne in 1970 and It had a 3 speed. One of 4 according to the GM docs he said. No sure exactly if that was 4 with l72 and 3 speed or?

Carl, you'll have way more fun with four on the floor! That said, bolt action would have been kinda neat with the big block, a little more challenging to get some speed out, but plenty o' torque to make up for the lack of extra gear...

Yes I would think 3 L72 with 3 speeds. Has to be a lot of 4 speed ones. I know there is 39 L72 Impalas documented

Appreciate you posting/pasting that part MC, I couldn't figure out how to do it.

As to the Fire Chiefs car, Bob West, a locally respected car guy and businessman, told me he owned it in the 70's

He emphatically claims it was an L72 model, 425 HP with 3 speed column shift, a rusty used car when he bought it!!

2quick2c, sounds like you were talking to Bob, he used to have a white 1969 Impala SS 427, now he has a 1967 2 dr sedan

Thanks
Randy

Yes Randy it was Robert (bob), I sold him a radio delete plate for his 67.

Hey no problem, Randy.  I have a handy program which came on my mac that allows me to easily crop items on my screen.  Works pretty slick, so it was really quick to crop and post those.

Thanks for posting the info on these rare cars.  Most people don't seem have an appreciation for 3 on the tree, probably because we all pined away for 4-speeds when we were kids, but column shift manuals are a thing of the past and will never return (heck, these days floor mounted manuals appear to be on their way out).  Heck, you want theft protection?  Let's see some kid who's never seen one try to steal this!  Looks like an automatic but it has that funny third pedal... biggrin

Yes, and no shifting diagram in sight, that's the best part!

Yep!  That's it... what would somebody do who has no experience driving one?  smile

I have NO idea!

True story......my mom grew up in the city and learned to drive when she married my dad and moved to the country when she was 24. My dad passed away when she was 48. 4 years later she bought a new car, a 72 Malibu with a Powerglide. She had to learn how to drive an automatic, she'd never driven anything but a 3 on the tree until then! She even knew how to get out and line up the linkage under the hood when the shifter locked up as those 60's GM's were prone to do. As I recall the worst culprit was the 65 GMC we had on the farm.

Interesting story, Carl (sorry to hear about your Dad's passing at a young age, though).  So how did your Mom respond to the automatic?  I know when I go from a manual to an automatic I will find myself stabbing for the non-existent clutch pedal for awhile...

My '60 Chev was guilty as charged.  I'd be driving along happily shifting, then the feeling of the shifter would change and I'd know I would be stuck in 2nd until I could pull over.  I did find that if I moved the shifter a certain way, without putting side loads on it IIRC, that it would pop back 'right' again after a few tries.  A major inconvenience and I suppose it could be dangerous in some cases, though it never was for me... just a pain in the butt.  Looking back, it's amazing that such a major flaw could exist in their cars for so long without some kind of fix from the company, but that's just the way they rolled back then - today it would probably cause a recall...

A friend of mine had a 62 Impala and pulled the powerglide and put in a three speed. He used a floor shifter from Canadian Tire and by mistake he installed the levers on the trans the wrong way up. This made the shift pattern backwards. Somebody tried to steal it and couldnt get it to back out of the driveway! This was probably 40 years ago. I must be getting old!

Thanks
