Numbrs for GM records.

hi ll, hope everyone had a great christmas and new year. Right now hopefully shaking off the holiday tucker weight!

I would like to find out details of my car history from factory using the GM thingummy if it is still going. What numbers do I need? The only tag I have is the tag on the passenger pillar, not sure about chassis number, havent looked for that yet but didnt notice it in the usual spot. I believe it to be a fully imported RHD car as the convertibles were not shipped as CKD and had to be special order by dealers.

thanks!

Hi Phil,

Had my '66 Parisenne convert. RH done last year and you just fill out 'Form 3' with details, Vin and most importantly CCard number and they send the data. I also rang and had a good chat as they mentioned in an email that there is very little detail on the RH export vehicles, which explains why it was just a single sheet reply. Only 25 built that year.

They sent a lot of interesting data including build info and brochures, etc however it was all relevant to the Std Canadian builds.

Nice to have and great people to deal with, well worth doing.

Brian

When I was considering the purchase of a few of the vehicles I have (Canadian-built trucks too) I thought to get the numbers checked. I sometimes spent the extra to get the job done on a rush basis and thus had the info the next day, with the GM pedigree.  Wasn't all that cheap but it really adds to the confidence going into a deal and to the value on the other end I think. I haven't talked to those guys too much directly, although I would love to have a long, long chat.

I was trying to find the chassis number. It is not stamped in the usual spot, near the steering idler LHS because it was a dealer special order import. Any other places to check?

I wish there was more info given from GM services, for example my 69 2+2 sure only 632 made, but mine only came with a 350 2 barrel, how low production would that have been ? maybe less than the big block cars ? my 64 C/S on the other hand was a shock to find out it was a 283 car and not 327 as thought, last owner said it also has a posse rear ? would that not be listed on the doc also ? I will check that out in the spring..mind you not much my 64 is what it was when new..or told..just thinking out loud again lol

GM services have been more vague in their recent documentation . Years ago , they would state engine / trans combo and how many models were made with that powertrain combo . They would even provide a copy of the miocrfiche page showing all the options , engine codes, key codes  etc...

Now they simply state the options and how many models were made in total .

It's pay for play. I managed to pique the guy's interest enough that he did a bunch of "informal" searching for me with me on the phone, for about an hour, while we kept notes. But if I want to document my car as the one-of-one convertible four-speed 427/390, it'll take an unknown number of hours at $350 an hour.

In my case, there's no way to look up "how many convertible 2+2 four-speed with the L36". You'd have to find every L36 2+2 and then manually keep track. We did that and found 10 coupes and my convertible out of a total of 12, but could not find the 11th. Afterward I realized maybe it was a wagon (with an L36 and a stick?). But none of the data is easy to go through.

$350 an hour!!! I can think of much better ways to pay someone $350 for an hour of their time!

I've been there and seen how it's done.I would love to go thru all the sheets and put together the stats.

I wonder how hard it would be to digitize the data. I assume it's in microfiche and unsearchable, but you can send it off these days. I doubt there's enough demand to make it profitbale, but it'd sure be interesting!
