396 427 Dipstick and Tube Info Wanted 1968 - 1970


Would someone have a dipstick and tube that they know is from a 68-70 B body 396 427 or 454? I would like to get some dimensions off the stick and tube. I suspect I don't have the right pieces for the oil pan I have on my car which is from those years.

In my garage I should have the original dipstick & tube from my 1970 345 hp LS4 454 that's in my 2+2 convertible. It might take a little digging to find though.

That would be perfect, that is exactly what I would like dimensions from.

I may have the right stuff, but I don't know for certain because this engine was in a 67 A body before and I put a pan on from a car like your's. At worst when I do my first oil change I'll add exactly what the manual calls for when I drain it but for peace of mind I'd like to know what it all should measure. The more I look online, the more I think a lot of the repro parts suppliers are selling universal crap that isn't actually correct for specific models.

 I found this. I had to buy a original era correct dipstick/tube for my car. Even the repop oil pans are totally different for a '64 era 283.

Thanks guys. Maybe tonight I should make a drawing showing the measurements I'm after.

Basically it's tube length, and then the measurement from inside the "bell" below the handle of the stick down to the "add" mark and the "full" mark.

I've bought NOS dipstick tubes, that's what's on the 454's in my convertible & Parisienne. I should be able to get that part # pretty easily. Finding my originals will take a bit more digging.

I have the part numbers but I can't find any accurate information as to dimensions.

And I quit looking at all the sites selling supposedly correct repros, that was useless!

I found the mother load. Both the original dipsticks and tubes from my 1970 454's, as well as an NOS dipstick tube (part # 3928901). What info do you need?

The NOS dipstick tube is identical to the one from the engine that went into my Parisienne (engine was from a 1970 Safari Estate wagon).   The dipstick tube from the engine that went into my 2+2 convertible (engine was from my old 1970 Parisienne) is missing the mounting tab.

I figured I'd post this in case anyone else is working on something similar and would like to know.

Clint, this is the numbers I would like you to compare to see if your's are the same. I am fairly sure I have a 70'ish B body pan.

Dipstick:
A: 19-3/4"
B: 9/16"
C: 1-1/8"
D: 21-3/8"

Tube:
A: 4-7/16"
B: 21-3/16"

Yup, that's gotta be the right stuff. They wouldn't be that close and not the same.

Do you recall how much oil you put in for an oil change? The manual works out to 4.7 litres. I'm wondering if that is correct.

And thank you VERY much, that really puts my mind at ease that I have the correct amount of oil in it. I put more than 4.7 litres in but of course it was totally dry other than some assembly lube. Now when I dump it and replace it, that will be a much more accurate measurement.

I always change the filter with the oil, and use a tall filter. However, I don't follow all that closely how much it takes to fill it up. I'm sure with the filter it's over 4.7 litres. I've found recently that after running it for about 5 minutes, I keep trying to add a bit to bring it up to full, but it never seems to get there. That's even with waiting 5 minutes after adding. So finally I figure that's close enough, only to find it a bit overfull the next day.
