1968 Beaumont SD side moldings

Somewhere on this site, I came across some information indicating the 1966 Impala body moldings are the same as the elusive side molding on a 1968 SD.  Can anyone confirm this trim could be used/modified as SD side molding?

yes it is the same contour-you can get them made using the 66 impala side mouldings etc..finding someone who does OEM bright anodizing is going to be tricky though

Thanks.  When I get to that point I will investigate further.  Nice to have an option though.

Lots of research yet on this but I believe it is the standard side moldings.  I have done some on-line investigation but it is hard to tell how close it comes without ordering a set or finding a 63 impala at the wrecking yard to look at up close.

So any of the three side moldings off a 66 Impala 2 door hardtop would be worth grabbing?

There is a little more to than just it grabbing Impala trim. You're going to need access to original SD pieces to make exact copies. Several of the SD pieces are contoured (bends)which will require forming the pieces to match. As soon as you bend an original piece the anodizing spider cracks. Plus when you cut to length you will have to cut and form closed the ends and tig weld the corners then shape and re-polish.

So... to do it right you would need to strip the clear anodizing and have them re-anodized... not many guys left out there that do OEM clear style anodizing well...$$
Suppose you could leave them raw and re-polish as required.

If you have some skills it is totally possible but you will have some hours and money in them. The Impala trim is reproduced but is a little thinner and softer than the originals.

Game on... Post pics of your progress !!!

My thought is that considering the alternatives of 1) trying to find OEM trim and 2) if you can find it the price you would have to pay to buy it...???...a guy could invest some time and money into a salvaged and modified set. It will be a while before I get to this stage but will have my eyes open for moldings along the way. Look forward to anyone else posting about their attempts with this challenge.

I am also considering reworking impala trim. Missing about half of the trim for my car. The last time I inquired about it with Hubbards Impala it was on back order. I have since found a set at a salvage yard so I will attempt to work with the used stuff first. Impala trim is black in the center and the SD trim is white but I guess that is the minor part of the job.

the inside trim color has to do with the roof color I believe-the original roof color of my rag was white and the interior trim color was white as well-but I have seen cars with black vinyl roof and black convertible top with black interior side moulding trim

Thats right John , depending on the stripe colour on the 68 SD , the paint inside the metal SD trim is either white of black ( Ive seen both )
