I think so. If your carrier is a 2 series, you need a spacer.
I thought so as well. This diff was previously rebuilt and this was supposed to be a rebearing job. And only because water got in and pitted the bearings. Well it was set up with double shim thickness on the left side and almost no shims on the right side. And that was with.030 backlash. Spec is.010. I brought it in to .017 with hope it doesnt howl. With the new axles bottomed in the carrier the left one sticks out 3/8 further. I dont have the original axles but lm guessing the left one was cut shorter to make things work. Does anyone know where to locate that ring gear spacer we need to set this diff up properly? Heres a few pictures.
I'm not really up on the BOP diffs but I found a spot online that shows the 3 carrier choices.
What are you changing, what ratio to what ratio?
If I read this chart right, if you are going from 2.76 to 3.55 you might actually be jumping up 2 carrier options? If that's the case, I would sure think it would have to have a spacer.

Carl. It has 3.55 gears and was like that when Terry got it. It was put together carrier not matching the gears. Pretty sure its for hiway ratio. Im just trying to sort it all out and put it together properly. A spacer behind the ring gear should bring everything back in sink.

I'm thinking give Ames Performance Engineering a call. They should be able to point you in the right direction.
Also, is there a casting # on the carrier? Somewhere I have the Chevy 12 bolt posi carrier casting #'s written down, and if you provide your casting # I'll do some research.
