58 Laurentian all original

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum.  This is awesome that you have been able to help everyone out with many different questions.  I'll give you a background story.  My grandmothers aunt, purchased a 1958 Pontiac Laurentian 4dr 6 3spd.  My grandmother then purchased the car in 1978.  My father then got the car, i would say in the mid 80's.  I was born in 88 and as far back as i can remember i have been staring at this car sitting in storage.  My dad has now passed it down to me.  I am very excited to get this car cleaned up and at least back to a Sunday driver.  I will post pictures as i get them for my progress.  One thing i am finding a hard time doing is getting info on how many of these cars were made.  Where do i find parts for this thing?  I did find a parts car sitting in a field that i would like to pick up but it still doesn't have everything i need.  any info would be greatly appreciated.

Bryan, welcome here all the way from Morris, a whole 45 minutes from you!

We have some 58 experts here so you'll get some answers I'm sure.

For the record, keep your eye in the lounge section here. A bunch of us get together for coffee breaks, sometimes a breakfast or an occasional garage tour or whatever. Of course that won't happen now until this whole virus mess is over but we'd love to have you show up.

I'm one of the moderators here, I'm going to expand your pictures for all to enjoy!

Welcome! That sure is a nice way to get a collector car, knowing the history and all. The 58's are pretty glitzy with all the chrome. Luckily the chrome appears to be good, because to rechrome in today's world would be frighteningly expensive (but impressive).

The trick to driving a 3-in-the-tree is to not try to do it quickly but precisely.

Bryan, a hardy welcome aboard from Milton, Ontario. Glad to have you join the good ship C.P. and i know you are going to love it. Ask away all your concerns and questions concerning your 58 Poncho. Like everyone else here on C.P., many photos of your 58 are required. Mr. Bob Crocker is our 1958 Pontiac guru here and he may be able to answer your questions. Enjoy the ride and cheers. smile

I think even better is if we can convince him to send all those photos to Todd along with his story so we can stare at it, top of the page, for a whole month!

Beautiful '58!  You are truly lucky to be the next caretaker of that wonderful car in your family.  I'm sure that by now the car is considered a family member in itself!

Would be a great monthly feature car to grace the top of this forum for a month and then be immortalized in the CP calendar the following year, where we would have another chance to stare at it for a month!

Bryan, i hope you know about now that your 58 Poncho will be a future C.P. Feature Car. There is no point in fighting it in any way Bryan. The question is......... what month will your 1958 Pontiac be featured. Hmmm. smile

First of all let me say welcome aboard.
Secondly what an interesting story and special car. Certainly worthy of top of the page.
You can get a history of your car, when manufactured, which dealer it shipped to, original features, number of like equipped models etc by contacting GM Vintage Vehicle services ( a fee does apply )
Also if you post the info off the data plate found on the firewall most of us here will have a go at deciphering the numbers.
Looking forward to seeing and hearing more about your families 58.

Completely understandable, I think most people are focusing on just keeping things together these days, as the fallout from the Covid-19 situation is widespread.

Looking forward to learning more about your car - when time and circumstances allow.

hi  - what parts are you looking for?

A yard in Gunton which about 25km north of stonewall has this Laurentian 4 door - pretty complete - I can't remember if I checked under the hood to see what engine it has ( i have a vague memory that the engine was gone)

Anyway the the yard is just off of my route to the cottage.  If you let me know what you are looking for I can go check the car to see if it has those parts.

Very cool,  welcome from Wpg.  i just love stories like this, where a car stays in a family its whole life

You should spring for the GM vintage vehicle services documentation package.  ITs a bit cheaper than the now pricy 60's cars version.  The documents wont give exact options that were ordered, but it will be a nice peiece of paperwork to have.  having said that,   being a one owner car so to speak, you probably know all the info that will be on the documentation.

58 Pontiac looks good in any body style.

Makes me wish I'd bought a 58 Parisienne 348 car that was for sale in AB about 10 years ago.

Hey guys, once again really appreciate the feedback and help on this. I really didn't realize it would turn into a team effort!

Right now my cosmetic hitlist would be

Exterior:
Chrome trim piece between front and back door on driver side

One of the two antennas

Taillight lense

Interior:
Panel driver side below the dash

"Bigdreams" do you have a contact for the yard in Gunton? Might be worth it for me to pick up the whole package rather than piecing. That yard car looks like a different year, judging on the mirrors, but I could be wrong.

Hi there -  this 58 is at a place called interlake salvage which is a combination body shop/wrecking yard - the owner name is Jim - you should be able google them and get the phone number

Jim is a nice guy but he is not that cheap- however he is trying to sell the place so he might be more motivated to move stuff.- note he is a monday to friday operation

Pretty sure the car is a 58 - it might just have a different style of aftermarket mirror than yours on it

I have wandered thru a few country junkyards and this is first Laurentian I have seen- this car also a fairly recent arrival to the yard which is a good thing because it hasn't had a chance to rust into the ground  like some of the stuff in that yard

Given the snowfall over the last couple of days and how wet the ground was even before this recent snow it probably won't be easy to access the car for several more weeks

Good luck

Don

Bob - can you advise if the jack in the trunk of the pictured  junkyard car would be the original jack for that car?

thanks
