Drive belt just broke

DSC00066.jpg

My V-shaped drive belt broke today, lucky I wasn't far from home. Will try to buy one tomorrow morning if stores are open otherwise will have to wait.

I wonder should I leave 1/2 or 3/4 inch deflection? I don't want to put it too tight nor too loose.

67 Parisienne V8 with a 305 from a GMC pick-up instead of it's original 283.

I'm not sure what GM recommends. I always make them so that gentle pressure on the top of the belt in the middle of the span between pulleys would deflect maybe 1/2 an inch, no more than. You don't want it too awful tight or you'll find yourself replacing a water pump I'm betting.
