Powershifting a stock Muncie shifter


These things always get a bad rap. I rebuilt it with a new thicker shim, pivot pin and adjusted it just right. 

I'm not ready to blow up my 427 if I miss a gear but tonight I had the urge to do what I said I'd never do to this car, powershifting, just not at full throttle...

 That Deuce was a "Fake_L79" that didn't have an ultra rare 1966 Canadian B body 427 4 speed numbers block in it! If I kicked a rod out the side of this block because I missed a gear you'd hear me crying from coast to coast!  (In the first video attempt I missed 2nd gear and saw the tach go to 6 grand........)

I have always felt these shifters never were given a fair chance. I know they will never be a Hurst but I think the cool factor of the stock shifter makes up for it! If I wasn't so scared of blowing up my 427 I'd practice some more on it! That was only my third attempt at it with this combination. First try I did at about 25% throttle and got all the gears, second try under full throttle I missed 2nd and I didn't like seeing the tach hit 6 grand. 327's are made for that but 427's aren't, at least not in stock form.

  The last big block I built used the stock distributor with a Crane electronic kit instead of points, which incorporated a rev limiter. I only bounced off the limiter once before I reset it after break in.
 The install was easy and didn't have to upgrade anything else.

Pertronix III fits a stock distributor, with variable dwell, and adjustable rev limiter. I set mine to a humble 5500 rpm until im done my break in.

 I might have to eat my words (all the bad things I've said about Pertronix) and try one. The rev limiter idea is very appealing.

I have a complete Pertronix III billet distributor in my 496. Never changed the stock 5500 limit, but I'm riding it a lot. Happens fast. Should go up to 5800.

Cool video, looked like you were having way too much fun!! I have what I think is the stock shifter in the M20 in my Camaro and havent tried power shifting....too scared to break something lol, but otherwise shifts very well except for occasional balky 3-2 downshift while doing my best to heel & toe.

Interesting comments on Pertronix as well. I put the Ignitor II in my old 69 Cutlass years ago and was a huge improvement, been considering the Ignitor III upgrade for my current car.

Nice chirp between gears. My 442 has a full Hurst shifter, but both the 64 CS and the 78 Corvette have stock shift handles that I have modified. Power shifting is no problem, if I break I fix right. The chrome ball on my 64 is the original from 409 64, memories.

The 64 had a straight stock shifter, so I made a template so that the shifter could be bent back towards the driver. Had a buddy who does stainless steal bend my stock shifter handle from my template. Now I can shift sitting behind the wheel, no reaching or hitting the dashboard with my knuckles. Also took the shifter apart and changed the inner spacer like you did. On the Corvette the lower shifter unit is Hurst with a adapter that mates up a stock short handle. Tightened up the shifter and it works awesome.

You like me have had both types apart over the years, and I think the GM shifters have been given a bad wrap. The shim or spacer change and replacing a worn pivot pin make them better than new. Plus I like the look of them.

My 64 Impala 409 has Muncie shifter & 64 Poncho Safari wagon has Hurst, haven't had a problem with either " pounding the gears" !!!
