Adhesive or Tape Recommendations

So, when I restored the interior on my 69 2+2, I installed an NOS trim plate that mounts on the instrument cluster. It had the factory adhesive tape on it, and over the last few years, has lifted off at the edges. I removed it and cleaned the adhesive off the cluster and the trim piece. I am ready to reinstall, but want to make sure it remains in place. Any 69 owners or others with similar bonding of metal to plastic, have an adhesive recommendation?

Just make sure you don't glue with a super glue.

You have to allow for expansion and contraction.

Made that mistake.

Fortunately I have a replacement from Jerel !

I might try silicone adhesive as I used on my steering wheel.

I remember my dash bezel trim in my 69 2+2. When the car got really hot inside would buckle and distort like crazy. Only because it was fixed solid and wouldn't float. And my uncle that owned it before had gotten contact cement all over it trying to get it to stay down. My 67 Grande's fake woodgrain across the radio and heater control pops out a little when hot as well.

So good point Randy. It needs to be attached in a way that it can at least move a little bit. That aluminum is pretty unforgiving. Some thought out spacing of Permatex Ultra Black in dabs?

It should almost be on pins that sit in small grommets.

The trim was fine when I lived in Michigan it was fine. Since moving to Florida 3 years ago, it loosened up. Must be the heat! I like the silicone idea. Yes, Mark, its too bad it wasnt a solid trim piece with pins on the back.

3M  Mounting tape its about $7 , two sided appears with red peel off.  I believe it is 25 pound rated. I keep a roll in my tool box and I`m always replacing it so it gets used a lot. Works on emblems, modings  etc..

Go to your nearest glass company and get the double sided tape they use. Its thin but probably the highest sticking power Ive found. Excellent for trim pieces.

When I say glass company, I mean residential glass. Not Automotive.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Before I posted, I tried carpet tape (sticky stuff) but it ended up lifting too. I think I will try the Permatex adhesive sealant because it would be easier to position the trim piece. I will give a follow up on the result...fingers crossed! Thanks again!

Just wanted to report that the Permatex Adhesive Sealant work fantastic! I used a 1/2" wide bristle brush and smoothed the adhesive in the area where the trim mounts on the instrument cluster. About 1/16 thick. Placing the trim in that exact area was now easier, as the adhesive was forgiving and allowed the trim to be slide a bit to line it up. I cut some wood pieces, to give even pressure, and clamped them over the trim for about 4 hours. I then removed the clamps and was able to easily remove any adhesive that had squeezed out. The set-up time is 1 hour but full cure time is 24 hours. Time will tell on longevity, but I am not worried that it is going to fail, as the grip is stronger than needed.
