Well, as a guess, center, between the heads! Intake manifold I am sure he means.

Center head is often the term used here on the East Coast for an intake manifold although I also heard that a few times in Ontario. In PEI a hangar bearing is called a "steady bearing" and an oil pan is called a "bottom pan". Snow tires are often referred as (by the old timers) "Ground Grips". Took me a while to learn some of these terms when I worked in service here. A hood is still called a "bonnet" here too. I've also seen "tires" spelled the English way "tyres".

I learned something new today. Centre head, steady bearing and bottom pan are all new to me. Ground grips was a common term here when I was a kid.

Ok, if he has a 4 barrel centre head (intake manifold), what flange or bolt pattern does it have? (carter, holley, quadrajet, etc?) Photo's would help.

A steady bearing in my parts growing up was called a carrier bearing. When I first started in my field, I asked my GM parts guy for a carrier bearing and he didn't know what I was asking for. The intake was known as a "dome or battleship". I was in Brampton in '87 and went to get a dome gasket for my uncles G-van.. what's a dome gasket? Oil pan was a base pan.

As for the intake? I would say it would be an equibore, "squarebore" for '64?

Phil, on a power pack 283, the carb was a 4gc, about a 450 cfm, unless you have built some sort of screamer high reving 283, Id go no bigger than a 283. As was discussed above, what intake do you have amd what carb will it accept?

Welcome to Canadian Poncho btw from a fellow east coaster.

Hi Phil, welcome from Halifax. DonSSDD is likely right the 4 BBL of choice by GM was a Rochester 4gc. In my mind, since your 283 came with a 2BBL which they all did from 62 onward, you need to Google the casting number from the intake to find out what carb it was designed to accommodate. As a Cape Bretoner, we use to refer to the intake as 'dome' so I get the centre head name but have never heard of it Interesting how we all have different names for the same parts. Please don't let that deter you from posting!

Typo on my note above, cfm 450/500 recommended.

Rochester 4gc used on at least 59 283s and low hp 327s until the quadrajet came out. Higher hp 327s had a Carter afb, likely a 450-500 cfm. For instance, in 62, the 283 only came as a 2 barrel, the 327-250hp had a 4gc, the 327-300hp had an afb. The 63 low hp 409 had a big 4gc, high hp had 1 or 2 afbs.

I have a couple of factory rochester 4GC carburetors for a factory square bore manifold,  if one is of any interest to you.  will need rebuild.  if you are wanting a stock factory look that is.

If you go with a Edlebrock or Holley the stock 4 bbl. air filter won't fit [ if you have one] as these have a larger dia. opening but a aftermaket "open filter" will work. Also you can get a carb. adapter plate to fit your older "intake " but that will raise the carb a 1/2" or more. a picture of manifold [ centre head] would help?? Welcome from Blackstock Ontario
