carb swap


Hi all, got the old carb off, studs look suspiciously deteriorated. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Yes, I just did this job on a 283 intake belonging to a friend of mine. His 2 studs broke off.

I found a nut the right size for the stud (if it would have been intact) and set it down on the intake over the broken stud. Cranked my little 110 mig up to max and welded the nut onto the stud. Got out the torch and heated the intake as much as I could from the side of the casting. I never aimed the flame at the flange where the gasket will go because I didn't want to risk messing up that flat surface. One of the studs I was lucky, it came out with the first nut I had welded on. Second one I had to weld a nut on a second time because the first nut broke the weld and came off without removing the stud. Welded the second nut on, heated the intake from the side again with the torch and out it came.

Or plan B, call around until you find a shop that says "Oh yeah, no problem, bring it in" and let them do it!

I had no trouble finding them but as always, it all comes down to the guy at the parts counter... I think the ones I got were Dorman.

thanks Carl, good stuff to know, also there are two holes on the base that are not bolt holes and they are full of what looks like carbon, would you know what they are for and if they need to be cleaned out?

Yes, that is the heat crossover under the carb. Your carb base gasket will likely have the matching "trough" cut out of it. The exhaust runs across there warming up the carb which theoretically makes it run nicer sooner in cold weather. Lots of guys tap those ports with a threader and then put plugs in there to close that up. You can do the same effect as that if you put a block off gasket (without the "trough") under the carb.

I've done very little with 2 barrel engines in my time but Beaumontguru told me there is a gasket like that for the 2 barrels will block that off. Maybe he will see this thread and post here.

well, got the studs drilled out and tapped, new studs installed and plugs put in the heat vents, new carb on and fired her up! Hope the pic is accessible

ya i was able to get the studs here in town also, which was good. i drilled and tapped the heat holes and plugged with 1/2 inch course thread cut off bolt. seemed to work well. compression check tomorrow and run my scope in the cylinders and have a look see.
