GM Canada Power Beam Headlights.


Last year when I was building my bumper/grill assembly, I decided to go with all new headlights.

I usually drive with the lights on during the day for safety.

Sunday, when I moved the car I noticed one had blown out already.

The other one has a stress crack !

I kept the bulbs that I took out.

High beams consisted of one halogen and one T-3.

I pulled the low beams out of the box and cleaned them up.

One had one of the prongs damaged but some careful soldering fixed that.

This car was  GM dealer serviced.

What years were these Power Beams used ?

I believe T3's were normally used prior to 1970, then from 1970 they were power beams.

How bright can they be during the daytime ?

They're dim already at night.

Hard to tell how much of the dimness of T3's today is related to their age and how much is related to my age!

 The only thing I can think of is that after I built the unit, I dropped it off at the body shop as we were going to fit that fiberglass nose.

Of course Jerel saved me from that by providing a beautiful original nosecone.

It looked like the one Howmac has for sale.

The prongs protrude and are in contact with the ground, if not supported like this.

My guess is, it got moved and sat down with all the weight of the whole assembly on those prongs.

Mark has offered to build me a relay system to take pressure off the switch (NO RUSH MARK)

After I get that installed, I will put Halogen back in.

LOL somehow I figured it was another one of those freebies you do for everybody. Nice offer. You did a write-up on doing relays didn't you? That's one of the many things on the list I want to do to my car eventually. Then I'll install all halogens. Right now it has a pair of T3s and a pair of halogens.

It really is one of the most cost effective mods you can do on these older cars. Although we tend not to drive much at night, improving your daytime brightness never hurts.

I'll get a little kit together for you Randy. Thanks for the remind nudge!
