Wanted, 64-68 outside mirror.


Hey guys, I think all Pontiacs 64-68 used this type. I know there are plenty of repop's out there, but I feel they are junk as witnessed by the one pictured (on the desk), was new and it went floppy right away. I attempted to repair it which required two screws on the cup. Looks like crap. I'm looking for one that looks well worn and patina' d to match the left hand mirror (pictured on the door), but without the flop. Some pitting is fine. The lens is not important as I have a nice date coded one in the floppy.

Needing a workable gasket as well. I really like having a RH outside mirror on my cars, and think it wouldn't distract from that "as barn found" look too much.

Any help appreciated,

Mark, I know there was a discussion here a while back about RH mirrors on our 65-66's. In the early 80's I put a LH mirror on the RH side of my black automatic 66 Grande Parisienne and as I recall it was fine. However, in that discussion I know some guys stated that you can't get the correct angle on a left hand mirror when it's on the right door. I'll be curious to see how this works for you.

And as I write this, I'm thinking I have a spare 66 mirror here. If I see this works for you I may even do the same if I can bring myself to drill holes in the right door. If I knew for sure I'd never do it on my own car you could sure have this mirror of mine. I'm just scared you'll put it on and love it so much you'll talk me into doing it on my car!

I have one on the 67, and it works fine. It at least gives you a view down that side when parking, or backing to the curb.

And it certainly could pass for a dealer installed option Carl, just make sure it matches the left side fairly close in look. I'm sure some people did it. But yes, it's cringeworthy to drill into the door.

It's an identical twin to my left mirror that's on the car now. 

The one you put on your 67 was simply a 67 left mirror?

I know there is actually a part number for the right mirror in the accessory catalogue.

That's strange that there is a R/L part number. The casting appears to be an exact mirror image split down the middle. The stem sits exactly 90 degrees to the base as well.

Unless there is differences in the mounting base and gaskets through the years to accommodate the door stamping shapes?

I installed a repro 65 mirror from Ames on the passengers side of my Custom Sport well over 10 years ago and have been very happy with it. After carefully measuring to make sure it matched the driver's side location I drilled the holes and then after mounting it found it wouldn't view along the side of the car as needed as it wouldn't pivot far enough. A few minutes thinking and maybe a few beers later the solution came to me. To make the head pivot more you can do one of two things chip away at the chrome head or notch the pin. A three corner file put a slight notch in the pin which allowed the head to pivot just that little bit more. Success. And in case you're wondering the material in the pin where I put the notch has never showed any sign of discolouring or rusting.

 I also mounted one on the pass side years ago, but didn't modify the pivot. I added it more for a cosmetic or symmetrical appearance as I thought it looked odd with a single mirror. One thing that does differ from the aftermarket is the tinted glass.

Here's something to keep in mind too. Right hand mirror mounts farther back on the door than the right side, that's why it's a different mirror. Check inside the door and you'll find the stiffiner plate is there farther back on the passenger door.

 I'm looking at a mirror right now and I'm not sure how you mean notch the pin Ted? I'm assuming as seen below?

 Ken, now we need a template to find that right spot, and a genuine RH mirror to compare to a LH to see how it differs. Does the reinforcement have 2 holes present? Anyone have a RH door shell?

 And finally, does anyone have a RPO 65-66 RH mirror?

I was lucky enough to find an NOS rh mirror on ebay for my 67 some years ago and it came with a diagram for where to drill the holes. That prompted me to look inside the door to confirm the stiffener location. That piece of paper is nowhere to be found now though, DOH!!  Somebody somewhere has that info in a service manual I'm guessing.

No , Chev has a different style of mirror than a Pontiac. I'm just referring to the placement of the mirrors. If you put the right mirror in the same place as the left you'll be looking at the edge of the door glass vertical run in the right mirror as it's turned so sharply toward you in the driver's seat. That's why it's farther back on the door.

Ok, gotcha.

I think I'm gonna get a friend to help me sometime. Get him to hold the mirror in place on the passenger door and see if the angle is right. I'm convinced it worked fine on my automatic Grande Parisienne back in the 80's. Have to see if I can find a picture that shows it.
